LISTENING POST I

Italian Americans
Light Up Excalibur

DANNY RASKIN

Local Columnist

I

t was a beautiful evening
for so many reasons .. .
Pat Archer, owner of Ex-
calibur, was there in a tux .. .
after battling a hospital siege
. . . I hadn't seen Joe and
Angi Bartoletti in about 30
years . . . They have been
married 33 years now . . .
such a fine couple . . . and
both look better today than
they did back then . . . Joe
presently owns All-State Con-
struction Co. and is franchisor
for the Father & Son Con-
struction companies.
Joe Weaver, TV 2, was
master of ceremonies and
joined in singing "Happy Bir-
thday" as a cake was brought
to Pat . . . Everyone signed a
giant birthday card.
Reno Garagiolo (Reno Con-
struction) and Rose Ann Ma-
ly (Lawyer's Title) co-chaired
the very fine annual fun-
draiser by Italian American
Cultural Society at Excalibur
on Franklin and Nor-
thwestern . . . with 100 people
turning out in a big tribute to
Pat, who does so much for
humanity.
On the committee helping
Reno and Rose Ann were Gus
Russo, Doug Caravaggio, Pat
Archer, John Zafferana, Ed
Schribner, Tom Turner, Al
Morrison, Frank Napoli and
Ned Piccinini.
Excalibur Executive Chef
Marty Wilk was at his usual
top form . . . with excellent
waitress Nancy Scherer serv-
ing his fine fare at our table.
The affair also marked 30th
anniversary of Italian
Cultural Center, not just for
Italian people, but all races,
colors and creeds.
John Cetrone and his trick-
a-minute routines is back at
Excalibur, behind the bar and
helping on the floor . . .
Robert Davis, who many folks
remember from a number of
fine niteries around town, is
general manager . . . Sheila
Mulholland is a fixture back
of the bar . . . as folks like
Nick Sorise, co-bossman at
Nicky's; Tony Vitrene of Steve
Petix Clothier; Antonio
Foglia of Antonio's of Italy
Hair Salon; Larry Warren,
John Zafferana, Robert Guz-
zardo, Doug Cavaggio, etc.
strutted the long beautiful
"X" bar area.
Pat Archer couldn't have
asked for a better party on his
birthday and recovery.
CONGRATS. . . . to Belle
and Charles Ruben . . . on
their 40th anniversary . . .

celebrated with a luncheon
recently at the Furniture
Club by their children, Ellyce
Field, Nancy Macciomei and
Douglas Ruben.
SOL KASH took up golf at
75-years-old . . . Now 80, he
already has his first hole-in-
one . . . Was with three
neighbors at the Kingpoint
Country Club in Delray
Beach, Fla. where Sol and
wife Sadie divide the year bet-
ween Farmington Hills .. .
His ace came on the 110-yard
hole in what so many yearn a
lifetime for . . . and he got in
just five years.
CONGRATS. . . to Esther
and Max Rubin . . . on their
49th anniversary . . . and to
Esther . . . on her birthday .. .
tire same day.
THEY'VE BEEN doing it
36 years . . . boarding a bus at
the Jewish War Veterans
Home on 12 Mile at 8:15 a.m.
and traveling two hours to the
Battle Creek Veterans home.
Members of the Lt. Roy F.
Green Post and Auxiliary
take more than just cases of
fresh fruits, gifts, clothing,
etc. . . . More importantly a
lot of love and respect for the
600 patients there.
It was Christmas day and
hospital employees were off
but the JWV guys 'n gals
"filled in" as the patients
were brought into the
auditorium for entertain-
ment, bingo, refreshments
and gifts . . . plus volunteers
going through the wards with
large gift bags for each
patient.
This is where Lt. Roy F.
Green Post and Auxiliary
money goes from selling pop-
pies and holding bingos.
Bernard Hoffman, past
department commander, was
chairman . . . Post com-
mander is Milton Greenberg
and Ruth Klein is auxiliary
president.

SHEILA SLOAN and
Rosemary Bannon are co-
chairpersons, assisted by a
committee of 60, when Nolan
Miller, noted designer for TV
hit show "Dynasty," among
other television and movie
goodies, appears here in a
benefit for the Fashion Group
of Detroit ... It'll be Jan. 14,
6 to 9 p.m. at Top of the
Pontch, Hotel Pontchartrain,
downtown Detroit.

AD AGENCY Dept. . . .
Mars Advertising . . . Jim
Baker a new art director .. .
Edward Irons, director of
media planning . . . and
David Reagan senior art
director.
