Jerusalem — Yad Vashem,
Israel's national Holocaust
museum, is nearly bankrupt
and may be forced to close in
the next few months unless
financial aid is forthcoming.
Officials of the world's best
known memorial to the vic-
tims of the Holocaust have
made an urgent appeal to the
Finance Ministry to take im-
mediate action to increase its
budget and provide special
aid. "History will not forgive
us if we do not carry out the
necessary steps to allow Yad
Vashem to continue its work
in an appropriate manner,"
wrote Education Minister
Yitzhak Navon on behalf of
Yad Vashem. He noted that
the institution's massive ar-
chives and research facilities
are "part of the struggle
against those who try to show
that the Holocaust never hap-
pened."
Officials at Yad Vashem, in
Jerusalem, say they do not
have enough money to pay
salaries or bills. Reuven Daf-
ni, deputy director, said
recently that the museum
would have to close in the
coming months if no financial
aid is provided.
