THE CAMPING ARM OF CONSERVATIVE JUDAISM

New York (JTA) — Yid-
dishists and Jewish secular
humanists will each be
represented by new organiza-
tions, as announced at
separate inaugural conven-
tions held recently.
The founding conference of
the American Committee for
Yiddish and Yiddish Culture
was attended by more than
125 delegates from Jewish
organizations concerned with
stimulating Yiddish culture
in the United States and
abroad, including represen-
tatives of the Workmen's Cir-
cle, Jewish Labor Committee,
Jewish Forward Association,
Labor Zionist Alliance, I.L.
Peretz Writers Union and
Zerub avel-Go 1 dm an-Tyberg
Poale Zion Circle.
According to the founding
constitution, the new, New
York-based organization will
"undertake the high respon-
sibility of spreading the Yid-
dish word, encouraging the
use of Yiddish as language
and literature, creating an
awareness of values and
pleasures of Yiddish culture,
and binding together in com-
mon purpose all organiza-
tions.

Farmington Hills will be
headquarters for the Federa-
tion for Secular Humanistic
Jews. More than 150
delegates gathered at a foun-
ding convention in November
in East Hanover, N.J., spon-
sored by the Congress of
Secular Jewish Organizations
and the Society for
Humanistic Judaism.

The new federation is one of
five such new regional
organizations formed since
the creation last year of the
International Federation of
Secular Humanistic Jews.
Their announced purpose is
to "attract and be a voice for
the more than 50 percent of
Jews on this continent who do
not belong to temples and
synagogues because they
prefer a cultural Jewish iden-
tity."

Ambassador
Is Confirmed

Washington (JTA) — The
Senate on Dec. 22 confirmed
Henry Grunwald to be U.S.
ambassador to Austria. He
was confirmed by voice vote
without debate.

Senate Majority Leader
Robert Byrd (D-W. Va.) called
the confirmation of Grun-
wald, who is Jewish, "one
more goody" for President
Reagan.
