Sentences
Lengthened

Bonn (JTA) — An East
Berlin district court judge
last week lengthened the
sentences imposed by a lower
court on four young neo-Nazis
who were involved in a major
anti-Semitic incident.
The prison terms were
changed from 14 to 18
months in two cases and from
two to four years in two
others. The four youths,
whose names were not re-
leased, burst into the Protes-
tant Zion Church in East
Berlin shouting, "All Jews to
the gas chambers," "Pig
Jews" and other offending
slogans.
They attacked congregants,
severely injuring several of
them. The church is known
for its activities in promoting
a Christian-Jewish dialogue
and is a center for ecological
and peace groups which criti-
cize or oppose the Communist
regime in East Berlin.
The youths' original sen-
tences were described by the
official press here as "minor,
outrageous," and the state
prosecution immediately ap-
pealed the penalties.
The trial amounted to the
first public admission that
neoNazi groups were operat-
ing in East Germany.

UN Condemns
Israel At UN

United Nations (JTA) —
Israeli diplomats at the
United Nations expressed
disappointment last week
over the U.S. decision to abs-
tain from voting on a Securi-
ty Council resolution, which
deplored Israel's handling of
the disturbances in the Gaza
Strip and West Bank.
The vote in the 15-member
Security Council was 14 in
favor with no objections.
Israeli diplomats said they
regretted that the United
States did not veto this "one-
sided and unbalanced resolu-
tion," by voting against it.
The United States is one of
the five permanent members
of the Security Council and as
such enjoys veto power over
any resolution in the council.
The resolution states that
the Security Council "strong-
ly deplores those policies and
practices of Israel, the occupy-
ing power, which violate the
human rights of the
Palestinian people in the oc-
cupied territories, in par-
ticular the opening of fire by
the Israeli army, resulting in
the killing and wounding of
defenseless Palestinian civil-
ians."
