Is Criticized
Buenos Aires (JTA) — An
American Jewish leader urg-
ed the Vatican's represen-
tative to publicly condemn a
blatantly anti-Semitic homi-
ly delivered by a Roman
Catholic priest of Cordoba
Oct. 4, and expressed concern
that the Vatican has not yet
spoken out.
Seymour Reich, interna-
tional president of B'nai
B'rith, raised the issue at a
meeting with the Papal Nun-
cio, Msgr. Ubaldo Calabresi.
He was referring to the mon-
thly mass honoring "victims
of subversion" at which
Father Manuel Beltran de-
nounced the "bad Jews" who
"surround" the government
of President Raul Alfonsin
and suggested that the Pro-
tocols of the Elders of Zion
was a document worth reflec-
ting on.

Phoenix (JTA) — The U.S.
Department of Housing and
Urban Development (HUD)
has rescinded a memorandum
which would have demanded
that federally subsidized
Jewish apartment complexes
offer non-kosher food in addi-
tion to their kosher man-
datory meal programs.
The rule, announced in
August, would have affected
more than a dozen HUD-
subsidized Jewish apartment
projects through the nation.

Shapiros Cited
At Testimonial
President Harold Shapiro of
the University of Michigan
and his wife, Vivian, will be
toasted and "roasted" at a
special testimonial dinner on
Nov. 17 at the Jewish Com-
munity Center in Ann Arbor.
The Shapiros will be
honored as they leave the
University of Michigan to
assume the presidency of
Princeton University.
The black-tie-optional din-
ner is a fund raiser for the
Ann Arbor Jewish Communi-
ty Center and will establish
a tradition for honoring
outstanding people.
A small ensemble from the
Ann Arbor Chamber or-
chestra, led by director Carl
Daehler, will provide the
evening music.
