young women, such as the
metropolitan areas or college
towns, according to the Har-
bor line.
But clearly, women aren't
the only victims.
"Rape also happens to
men," the counselor said.
"They call saying they feel
they were coerced into sex.
Rape is an act committed
against another person's will.
A man can be coerced into
sex, though it's harder to im-
agine!"
According to U-M Sexual
Assault Center director
Steiner, one out of every ten
men will be raped in his
lifetime, compared to one out
of every three women. "Men
being raped is not uncommon.
It happens to everybody.
There's not a typical victim
and there's not a typical
rapist. We have instances of
93-year-old women and two-
month-old babies.
"You do know women
who've been raped but you
just don't know it. They've
never told you. There's no
reason they have to hide it.
But that's what our culture
told us — you just don't talk
about it."
Whethex. to man or woman,
the date-rape scenario is
almost always the same. Lisa
is out with someone she
knows and suddenly it's like
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. One
minute David was one way
and the next minute he's
changed.
It's difficult to pinpoint the
causes behind date rape. "The
issues are control and anger,"
suggests Steiner. "But who is
vulnerable to that search for
control varies with the rapist.
We can't always prevent it."
Tips on preventing such
situations are boundless.
Basically, if you dont want it,
say so. No one has the right
to take another person
against their will," said Troy
Police Officer Phil Steele, who
offers workshops in rape
prevention throughout the
community. "We're talking
about a crime of violence and
violation. Just a date or buy-
ing them dinner doesn't mean
they owe anything or any sex-
ual favors in return!'
Steele, who gives lectures
on the subject to church
groups, civic groups and Girl
Scout troops, advises, "Make
sure you know the person
you're going out with. If it's
the first date, double and go
somewhere in public. It's im-
portant that anybody who's
out and about in society is
aware of this type of crime.
Your head is probably your
best weapon. You should
know what you can do to
lessen your chances of becom-
ing a victim!'

In the last few months, a
date rape prevention guide
has been sent to campuses na-
tionwide. "The sooner date
rape is recognized as a serious
problem, the sooner people
can do something about it,"
said Bernice Sandler, co-
author of the guide. Titled,
Friends Raping Friends —
Could it Happen to You?, the

guide tells coeds to watch for:
*Men who do not listen to
you, ignore what you say, talk
over you or pretend not to
hear you. Such men general-
ly have little respect for
women and would be more

likely to hear 'no' as meaning
'convince me!
*Men who try to make you
feel guilty or accuse you of be-
ing uptight if you resist their
sexual overtures.
*Men who drink heavily. A
man drunk can get sexually
aggressive, angry or violent if
he is rejected.
If struck by date rape, ex-
perts say not to be silent. Any
date rape victim should get a
medical exam as soon as
possible. Later, the woman
should talk to a counselor
about the pros and cons of
reporting the rape to the
police.
The U - M Sexual Assault
Center offers these preven-
tion tips:
If you don't feel comfortable
with a friend's or date's
behavior, say 'no! Be asser-
tive. 'hell him to stop or leave.
*Be aware of your surroun-
dings in case you need to
leave quickly.
*Let friends or family know
where you will be and when
you will be back.
*Be aware that rape happens
in situations where the par-
ties know each other. And be
aware that alcohol and other
drugs affect judgment and the
ability to communicate.
All this week, in its fight to
combat date rape on campus,
the U - M has been holding a
Sexual Awareness Week,
featuring open talks on the
changing sexual roles of
males and females, panel
discussions on the issue of
sexual assault, offering
literature and pamphlets
from booths set up around
campus as well as special
meetings for survivors of rape.
Said Steiner: "If we are go-
ing to stop date rape, we're go-
