Happy With Yourself°

Continued from preceding page

Liss, who was raised in Pitt-
sburgh, Pa., and Buffalo, N.Y.,
holds a B.A. degree in adver-
tising and public relations
from Syracuse University and
pursued studies toward a
degree in personnel ad-
ministration at Case-Western
Reserve University. She also
spent two years at Miami
University of Ohio.
Liss said she has mixed
emotions about being single,
but, nevertheless, doesn't let
it get her down. "Because I
am single, I always tend to
look on the bright side of be-
ing single. I like my in-
dependence, the ability to
make my own plans. I like
feeling free to meet all kinds
of new people. Careerwise, I'm
certainly unlimited
geographically because I'm
single and don't have to have
the concern about someone
traveling with me if I decide
to leave the city. No one is
waiting for me at home if I
change my plans in the mid-
dle of the road."
However, Liss said, there is
another side of the coin. That
is that sometimes she would
like to have someone waiting
for her at home at the end of
the workday, and that,
although her friends provide
her with a great support
system, she would really like
to have one person "to share
with:'
Although she is not critical
of single life, she is critical
about what she perceives as
the community's attitude
toward it. She said she feels
that there aren't enough ac-
tivities for the younger
singles — age 22 to 30 — and
that the community's at-
titude is "unfortunate."
"There seems to be an at-
titude toward singles that the
programming for them
should be able to be done with
no funds, no dollars. In other
words, you have no other
responsibilities, therefore, you
should come up with your
own money to do the pro-
gramming that you want to
do. I think that perhaps more
dollars need to be put into
more sophisticated kinds of
programs." Among these she
suggested personalities from
the entertainment and jour-
nalism fields and from the na-
tional lecture circuit. But just
providing sophisticated pro-
gramming is not enough.
"Until you take this group of
people and treat them like
the married groups of people
for whom community events
are planned, you will not be
doing them just service in
bringing them together in an
arena where they can all
meet one another."
She said the nature of
singles is that they don't want

to do the fund raising for pro-
grams. Rather, they would
like to submit the ideas and
have the community fund
them. Of course, Liss said,
there are some activities that
are self-sustaining, such as
dances and lectures, which
gain revenue from admission
charges. When the communi-
ty does not fund singles pro-
grams, it seems to send a
message to singles, Liss
asserted. "We almost get a
message that says 'It's your
fault that you're single and
we're not going to do
anything to help you! "
Liss, however, is not
downplaying the many ac-
tivities sponsored by the
Community Network for
Jewish Singles. She lauded
the Jewish Community
Center-based organization.
And, coming from what she
called a small town, is happy
with the diverse cultural ac-
tivities available in the
Detroit area.
Despite the fact that her job
flows over into evening hours
on occasion, Liss doesn't let
that ruin her social life. She
knows that by getting out of
the house singles have the
best chances of meeting each
other. "Don't bemoan being
single," she counsels. "You
will meet people if you're out
and about."
