Patty Liss: Finds pros and cons to being single.
Be Happy With Yourself
Is Key To Meeting People
HEIDI PRESS
News Editor
p
atty Liss finds that
she's gotten the most
fun out of life and met
the most men when she is
happy with herself. "Enjoy
what there is to enjoy and
don't feel like you must have
a mate," she advises.
Liss, 34, cannot help but
meet new people because of
her job, public relations
associate for the Jewish Com-
munity Council of Metropoli-
tan Detroit. At the council,
Liss is a volunteer coor-
dinator, promotes special
events, prepares and produces
printed materials, . edits a
monthly newsletter, prepares
monthly radio and TV broad-
casts and is the staff person
responsible for making ar-
rangements for the council's
50th anniversary celebration.
"When my professional hat
is on, I'm forced into a posi-
tion of having to have a smile
on my face, having people
walk up to me as a represen-
tative of the Council or the
Jewish community per se!"
However, in a social scenario,
she admits to being
somewhat shy. "As verbal as
I am when I get to know
somebody I'm very shy with
strangers. So, when I'm in a
crowd of people I tend to not
talk to people who I don't
know!' Liss said because of
this shyness she rarely goes
to singles functions. Once
there, she said, she often
speaks to women friends and
"that no one tends to walk up
to you!" She said she has to re-
ly on the women she's speak-
ing to to introduce her to
others she does not know.
In addition to her job, Liss
has met people through her
organizatonal work. A
member of Topaz Chapter of
Women's American ORT, Liss
said that affiliation helped
her become part of the Detroit
Jewish community when she
came here more than four
years ago. "What's really
wonderful is when you're ac-
tive with a national organiza-
tion like Women's American
ORT, which is what brough
me here. The moment that I
came to town, I knew a
number of people from having
been at district and national
conventions. So, I meet a lot
of people through the
organization!' In addition,
Liss has met people where
she lives and at Vic Tanny.
Liss said it is through her
affiliation with ORT that she
is making a contribution to
the community. At the same
time, she has helped with
Allied Jewish Campaign
telethons and uses her profes-
sional abilities wherever she
can. "I'm maybe a behind-
the-scenes cheerleader," she
joked. Besides her ORT ac-
tivities, Liss enjoys swimming
in her spare time. She also
reads historical fiction, and
does needlework, such as
crewel, embroidery and
needlepoint.
