Yitzhak Gitelman, a senior

ed semi-finalists in the 1988
National Merit Scholarship
Competition.
To be considered for a Na-
tional Merit Scholarship,
semi-finalists must advance
to finalist standing by
meeting high academic stan-
dards, being fully endorsed
and recommended by their
high schools, taking the
Scholastic Aptitude Test and
confirming their qualifying
test performance, and submit-
ting information about their
school and community ac-
tivities, personal interests
and goals.

B'nei Akiva
To Have Minyan
B'nei Akiva's Youth Minyan
will meet Saturday at Young
Israel of Greenfield for Shab-
bat morning services. The
services will be followed by
special games, stories and
quizzes. Kiddush will follow.
Chevreyah bet (high school)
will meet 4 p.m. Sunday at
the Compuware Ice Skating
Arena for an afternoon of ice
skating. Skates will be
available at the rink.
Refreshments will be served.
B'nei Akiva's Sunday Fun
Groups (ages 6-12) will meet
3:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at Young
Israel of Southfield. Members
will be able to participate in
a choir, drama club, sports or
game day. A November per-
formance of the choir and
drama club is planned.

As part of its Succot
celebration this year, the
students, staff and families of
Akiva Hebrew Day School in-
troduced the "Hakhel"
ceremony.
In the times of the Temple,
the Hakhel ceremony took
place every seven years dur-
ing the Succot holiday that
followed the Shniitta year.
At a platform in the cour-
tyard of the Temple, the king
of Israel at the time would
publicly read certain portions
of the rIbrah for the thousands
assembled for the occasion.

book of Leviticus (Devarim):
