occurred at the Balata
refugee camp near Nablus
where three Arab youths
were wounded in scuffles with
soldiers. The youths were part
of a group that set up a
roadblock of burning tires
and stoned military vehicles.
in retaliation for the fatal
shooting of a 12 year-old Arab
boy. The driver of a military
vehicle alleged he was attack-
ed by a stone-throwing mob
and fired his rifle to disperse
them.
Orchestra Plans
E. Europe Tour
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Israel
Philharmonic is scheduled to
play in Hungary and Poland
in November, solidifying re-
cently reformed diplomatic
ties between the Jewish State
and these countries, it was
announced last week. The
performances will be the first
for the IPO in Eastern block
nations since all but
Rumania broke off relations
with Israel following the 1967
Six-Day War.
IPO spokeswoman Michal
Oren said the IPO would give
one concert in Budapest and
five in Poland, at the invita-
tion of both these countries'
governments. She said the or-
chestra will be led by conduc-
tor Zubin Mehta, with violin-
ist Itzhak Perlman perform-
ing with them.
The IPO recently returned
from a concert tour of Spain,
which established diplomatic
relations with Israel in
January 1986 for the first
time ever.
JDO Threatens
-Klan Leader
New York (JTA) — A half
dozen members of the Jewish
Defense Organization (JDO),
backed by black youths, warn-
ed residents of a working
class, multi-ethnic
neighborhood that one of
their newest neighbors meant
trouble.
He is local Ku Klux Klan
leader Hank Schmidt, who
told a local newspaper that he
had moved this summer to
the Astoria section of Queens,
N.Y., to mobilize whites for
the usual Klan activities of
driving away non-whites.
The JDO attracted 300 peo-
ple, most of them quiet
bystanders, to its rally in
front of the three-story apart-
ment building in which
Schmidt lives. JDO leader
Mordechai Levy spoke con-
stantly through a
megaphone, supported by
chanting JDO members
holding two placards reading
"Death to the Klan."
