The Holdiays
For Children

New York — What's the
best way to teach children
about the Jewish High
Holidays? According to an
early childhood expert, stress
the differences between the
Holy Days and other holidays,
and stick to tangible things,
like giving charity and dipp-
ing apples in honey.
"Children tend to take
things literally," says Floreva
Cohen, director of the Early
Childhood Center of the
Board of Jewish Education of
Greater New York. "So it's
best to stick to real ex-
periences, rather than trying
to explain to them all about
the meaning of Rosh
Hashanah and the spiritual
concepts behind it."
Differences remind children
that it is a special time,
Cohen says. Parents can point
out that the holidays are a
time for families to be
together at meals and in the
synagogue; that they are part
of a community; and that the
blowing of the shofar, seeing
friends and relatives, and dip-
ping apples in honey, are all
part of the significance of the
holidays.
Cohen also suggests:
• Give charity with the
children, and explain who it's
going to (for example to help
someone in a hospital). Then
have the children place the
check in an envelope and in
the mailbox.
• Buy new clothing for the
child and teach him the bless-
ing over wearing something
new.
• Eat a new food for the
holidays.
• Since Rosh Hashanah is
the New Year, look over a new
calendar — or make a new
one together — and explain
that the Jewish New Year is
a time for beginnings.
"A child can understand
new beginnings, for example
the first day of school.
Therefore, parents can easily
explain that beginnings are
important; that this is
another year to try to be bet-
ter. A child can be taught not
merely to ask God for things,
but for the strength to become
better," Cohen says.
It's important for children
to experience "the real thing,"
such as the blowing of the
shofar, Cohen says, but educa-
tional materials can further
stimulate their curiosity.
