Ottawa (JTA) — A law that
enables Canada to prosecute
Nazi war criminals on Cana-
dian soil was adopted without
amendment by Parliament
Sept. 17 and received royal as-
sent the following day from
the Governor General
representing the Queen.
The law was drafted at the
recommendation of the
special commission headed by
Quebec Superior Court
Justice Jules Deschenes
which conducted a two-year
investigation of Nazi war
criminals living in Canada.
Under the new legislation,
about 20 alleged war
criminals will face prosecu-
tion and 281 suspected will be
investigated further. Prime
Minister Brian Mulroney said
that as long as he is prime
minister, no Nazi war
criminals will find safe haven
in Canada. He said it was
repugnant that Canadians
should have to share citizen-
ship with persons who com-
mitted crimes against
humanity.
Fire Extinguished
Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Haifa fire brigade extinguish-
ed a forest fire that was
threatening residential areas
Sept. 15. It was the latest in
a series of fires which have
destroyed acres of forest.
