The law was drafted at the recommendation of the special commission headed by Quebec Superior Court Justice Jules Deschenes which conducted a two-year investigation of Nazi war criminals living in Canada. Under the new legislation, about 20 alleged war criminals will face prosecu- tion and 281 suspected will be investigated further. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney said that as long as he is prime minister, no Nazi war criminals will find safe haven in Canada.
