day I had to stay home and
study. On Yom Kippur I
stayed at school and went to
Hillel but it wasn't like going
to Shaarey Zedek. I broke the
fast with a pizza.
"For Passover my friends
made a seder in the dorm one
night, and the other night I
was invited to a friend's
house!"
Jeffrey Margolis, Universi-
ty of Arizona, 30,000
students, 2,500 Jewish:
"Things went on about the
same for the holidays. I felt I
could not afford to miss class
because every day counts so
much. Some of my friends
went to services at Hillel. My
girlfriend cooked dinner.
"On Passover I went to a
small seder. There are a lot of
Jewish kids on this campus
and I'm surprised they don't
make more allowances for us
at the holidays!"
Lisa Weiss, Arizona State
University, 38,000 students,
2,200 Jewish students:
"I stayed at school, went to
classes and had dinner with
a few Jewish friends. The
Jewish kids are scattered all
over but there is a Hillel. I
went home Thanksgiving and
Christmas vacation and it is
too expensive to go more than
that.
"I once had a test on the
Jewish holiday. The professor
never mentioned reschedul-
ing and I felt pressured into
taking it. I know kids that
missed on the holiday and
some were excused, but they
don't have to let you make up
the work!"
Andrea Shagrin, Michigan
State University, 39,000
students, 2,500 Jewish:
"My parents said if I was
missing a lot then I should
stay at school. But I came
home for both holidays
because I respect my religion
and I wanted to go to services.
I was concerned that I'd miss
school but it didn't stop me. I
got the notes and was able to
catch up.
"This year I will miss the
first day of school because it
starts on the holiday."
Jonathan Maltzman,
Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, 8,000 students,
2,000 Jewish:
"It is too expensive to fly
home so I go to Hillel for the
holidays. I talked to my rabbi
before I went to school and he
suggested that I go to Hillel.
It is working out nicely; the
services are as good as they
are at home.
"We had tests during
Passover. Some of my very
religious friends were able to
reschedule exams when they
needed to!"
