Demjanjuk
Defense Focuses
On ID Card
Jerusalem (JTA) — Julio
Grant, a British documents
expert who exposed the fake
"Hitler diaries" in 1983, has
been engaged by the defense
in the trial of suspected war
criminal John Demjanjuk. He
was at the Israel Police Head-
quarters last week examining
the Trawniki identification
card which the prosecution
says was issued by the SS to
Demjanjuk when he trained
at Trawniki for duty as a
guard at the Treblinka death
camp.
The defense claims the
card, obtained from the Soviet
Union, is a forgery. But the
two defense experts who
testified to that effect when
the trial resumed last month,
were discredited under deft
questioning by prosecuting
attorney Michael Shaked.
One of them, Anita Pritchard,
attempted suicide after leav-
ing the witness stand.
Grant, who holds a degree
in chemistry, was called in to
try to salvage the defense
case. He is expected to base
his testimony on his analysis
of the chemical composition of
the paper and inks.
Grant will have ample time
to complete his investigation.
The trial was adjourned tem-
porarily after one of the
presiding judges, Avi Tals,
suffered a mild heard attack.
Another expert witness,
historian Nikolai Tolstoi, is
also in Jerusalem preparing
to testify. Tolstoi is a
specialist on the anti-
Communist Russian Vlasov
Army which fought on the
German side in World War II.
Demjanjuk claims he served
in that army during the
period the prosecution says he
was the Treblinka death
camp guard known into in-
mates as "Ivan the Terrible."
