Soprani features the big stole;
his version is a big jersey stole
over a matching jumpsuit or
two-piece suits. Princess-line
dresses have natural shoulders
and gently flaring skirts.
Evening styles include tafetta
separates in pale colors as well
as long jackets over wide-
legged shorts.
Mario Valentino — Short plaid
coats and fur-trimmed suit jack-
ets are standouts. Black fox
borders a tweed suit jacket, ac-
companied by a matching fox
hat. Other jackets come in a
quilted paisley print, as well as
cashmere jackets worn with
short leather skirts. The favorite
length for his leather collection
is short, everything from flared
shearling coats to beige suede
dresses with a poufed hem.

Romeo Gigli, best
known for his
snug jersey
dresses, is
pointing to an
entirely new
fashion direction.
A hit for evening is the com-
bination of black velvet and
metallic fabrics. Skirts are
flouncy and short, and the
bodices are form-fitting.
For day,
Gianni Versace
suits with mid-thigh skirts are
shown, the short length em-
phasized even more by sheer
tights and high-heeled shoes.
Sometimes, the suit minskirts
are draped or folded. Some
skirt styles have stoles emerging
from side seams, to envelop the
body.
Versace's evening outfits are
as overtly sexy as his day
clothes. He prefers the short
length for night, too, showing it
in pleated panel skirts and in
sheer, embroidered net skirts
with matching lacy bra tops.
