ISRAEL OPENS
NEW TEXTILE
MUSEUM
Israel's first archive and
'museum devoted to textiles,
apparel and fashion design
has been established by
Shenkar College of Textile
Technology and Fashion in
Ramat Gan.
A gift of historic and
designer costumes valued at
$500,000, which constitutes the
"core" of the archive's collec-
tion, was made by the Fashion
Institute of Technology in New
York City. Dr. Marvin Feldman,
the president of FIT, is a
member of Shenkar's board of
governors and a member of its
American Committee.
The FIT contribution consists
of a variety of work done by
such leading designers as
Pierre Balmain, Oleg Cassini,
Oscar De La Renta, Christian
Dior, Norman Norell, Molly Par-
nis, Arnold Scassi, Adele
Simpson, Pauline Trigere and
others.
These acquisitions were
shipped to Shenkar College,
together with antique clothing
from the collection of Mrs.
Albert Parker, the knitwear col-
lection of Susanne Gal,
costumes from the collection of
Frances Duehren and items
from the collections of Ger-
trude Flamholz and Mrs. Jan
Peerce.
Shenkar is seeking to ex-
pand the collection for the new
facility through gifts from
designers and curators in the
textile and apparel fields
throughout the world, as well
as through donations by promi-
nent private collectors. An ad-
visory committee of Israeli and
American leaders in the ap-
parel, textile and fashion in-
dustries will help establish
criteria for acquisitions.
