FRIDAY. AUG. 21. 1987
true restaurant folks whose
dedication is like a string
around their finger . . . remin-
ding them that the
rest aurant life is their real
life.
This is the case of people
like Jerry and Gino Spigno
. . . They sold their Cass Lake
restaurant in 1985 and paid
attention to a little bar they
had converted into a larger
one . . . Jerry and Gino liked
the spot and kept just its four
walls . . . completing gutting
the entire place . . . and giv-
ing it a new face job with
nicer-looking walls, pictures,
interior designing, new ex-
terior landscaping, outside
canopy, etc.
They call it Peppi's, corner
Elizabeth Lake Rd. & M-59,
originally opened by them
four years ago seating 120
strictly as a bar serving ham-
burgers and small grilled
items at the renovated In Bet-
ween Ban
But the restaurant bug
finally caught up with them
again . . . and a new addition
of 2111 square feet has a
large clean kitchen only six
months old serving seafood,
veal, 17 Italian specialties,
ribs, prime rib, chicken, -pizza,
sandwiches, salads, etc. .. .
Plus this there is a special
menu attachment . . . On a re-
cent visit there, Peppi's had
another seven seafood items,
specialty veal, pastas and
other dishes.
The new addition also in-
cludes an outdoor patio that
seats 50 people . . . Fri. and
Sat. nites it is virtually im-
possible to get a seat on the
patio.
When Jerry and Gino arriv-
ed here from Italy 20 years
ago, both worked for Uncle
Jerry Romano at his Albert's
Pizzeria on E. 11 Mile .. .
When Uncle Jerry sold the
restaurant, Gino worked at
Ford's four years and brother
Jerry at Carmen's, 10 Mile &
Gratiot four years . . . Then
came their own restaurant on
Cass Lake Road.
They still owned this other
restaurant while driving
around looking for a place to
sell booze, hamburgers and
pizza, with d.j. music for dan-
cing ... That's when they
spotted the former In Bet-
ween Bar which the two
bought and gutted . . . What
to call it was a question .. .
until both decided on naming
the bar after their grand-
father, Giuseppi . . . and so
Peppi's was born.
The chef is their cousin, An-
thony Romani, former stu-
dent at the Culinary Arts
School of Italy.
500 more feet is being add-
ed . . . for a walk-in cooler .. .
There is still d.j. dancing six
nights a week . . . Peppi's is
closed Sundays . . . Mon. thru
Fri., it's 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. and
Saturdays 3:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
. . . Kitchen closes at 10 p.m.
every night.
All wood trim at the
restaurant is by Jerry . . . He
also built the patio among
other things . . . It is a very
informal spot with low lights,
neon and lively atmosphere.
Yes, Jerry and Gino Spigno
are back in the restaurant
game again.
FIVE BAKERS of
Machus Pastry Shop in Birm-
ingham have been certified as
Master Bakers by Retail
Bakers of America under the
grandfather clause of RBA's
Master Baker certification
program . . . Maria Tisch,
Alfred Ehlers, Pearl Thouin,
Wesley McGuire and Preben
Hansen.
RBA's certification program
recognizes an individual's
skill and knowledge of baking
. . . Master Baker, a highly
skilled baker with knowledge
about all aspects of commer-
cial baking.
Under the grandfather
clause (effective through
March 31, 1987), bakers with
20 years verifiable commer-
cial baking experience were
eligible for Master Baker cer-
tification . . . Bakers applying
for Master Baker certification
after March 31 or who did not
meet the 20-year require-
ment, will be certified under
a testing program which in-
cludes written and practical
baking tests.
RBA, established in 1918, is
the national trade association
for the retail baking industry.

CAN YOU IMAGINE
DEPT ... Dr. Sam Gossman,
fishing recently at Mitchell's
Bay in Canada, throwing
back baby perch because they
were too small . . . Who
remembers the days of Club
Berkley and the original Nor-
thwood Inn on Woodward in
their heyday . . . when people
flocked from everywhere for
those succulent sauteed baby
perch?
