Comedy is Bob Saget's
orange juice, a real eye
opener, he says.
And he's hoping that a shot
or two of comedy will open au-
dience's eyes to what is now
- happening on CBS-TV, where
The Morning Program,
hosted by Mariette Hartley
and Rolland Smith from 7:30
to 9 Monday through Friday
on Channel 2, is trying to pry
loose some Nielsen ratings
from established trend-setters
NBC (The Today Show) and
ABC
(Good Morning
America).
A new rise-'n-shiner from
CBS? One could excuse a
yawn or two, given the net-
work's track record for the
a.m. schedule. But this time
could be different, argues
Saget. This could very well be
different.
Who's to argue? Saget has
proved very much the winner.
A popular mainstay of com-
edy clubs in Philadelphia, his
hometown, Saget has ap-
peared on the Johnny Carson
show, with Mery Griffin and
recently appeared in the film
Critical Condition, with
Richard Pryor.
Indeed, says Saget, making
movies is what makes him
especially happy.
"This is like graduate
school for me," he says of The
Morning Program, where
they have given him camera

crews and said, "Go, boychik,
create." He has made videos
for the show, even showing
one of his wedding, chupah
and all.
But moviemaking is
nothing new for Saget, whose
first effort, Beach Blanket
Blintzes, was shmear genius.
"I was 18 at the time. I put
every Jewish kid in Elkins
Park, Pa. in the film." It was
a hit — but hold the sour
cream. There was no sequel.
But Saget was not
disheartened — after all, he
was able to eat the props.
Humor has always been a
way to handle the world. "I
knew I was funny when I was
4 or 5," he says, while lamen-
ting "a dry spell in the sixth
grade."
So he developed dry humor.
But after graduating from
Temple University, Saget
headed out to Los Angeles to
develop an act. While there,
he found out that his Temple
film project, Through Adam's
Eyes, had earned a Student
Academy Award.
Applause is his Oscar now,
although he admits "I never
thought I'd be a stand-up."
When he does do club work,
Saget prefers working clean.
But then a lot of Jewish com-
ics, he says, are clean.
"That's a reflection of the
Jewish mother," he says. "I
see the Jewish mothers in all
of these comics. • It's what I
call the nice-Jewish-boy syn-
drome."
He is a nice Jewish boy —
