towards prayer texts, but also
as the guardian of time-
hallowed melodies, assuring
the preservation of traditional
nushaot (prescribed chants).
I think of the hazzan who
trains b'nai mitzvah to chant
scriptures according to the
sacred tropes prescribed by
tradition; or the hazzan who
teaches a choir of children the
melodies of the service, then in-
vites them to share his pulpit
by joining him in the musical
renditions of a service.
As the musical interpreter of
the liturgy, the hazzan brings
age-old sacred texts to life with
melody and emotion and
recreates, if but for a moment,
the worlds of the past, evoking
the beauty and devotion of the
era. Historically, the hazzan
has been the one who has
preserved the musical culture
of our people. To hear a hazzan
and choir chant selections of
the great European tradition, is
to be transported back in time,
to the synagogues of Warsaw or
Vilna and to the religious am-
bience that permeated these
walls.
Finally, there is the role that
the hazzan plays in today's syn-
agogue and in the community;
not only as a director of musical
programming, or a minister
with pastoral duties. The haz-
zan is the musical emissary to
the community; by being in-
volved in interfaith programs,
bringing Jewish song to
seniors, and by participating in
any untold number of special
and commemorative events
within the community and on
behalf of Israel.

In response to David Holzel's
article on salmonella in kosher
chicken ("Current Chicken
Squawk," May 29), let me cau-
tion your readers that
salmonella bacteria can be pre-
sent in all poultry, kosher or
not.
We purchase and eat only
kosher poultry from the local
kosher butcher shops. Unfor-
tunately, this did not prevent
my young son from becoming
seriously ill with salmonella
poisoning which entered his
blood stream and required (his)
hospitalization.
The only way to prevent
salmonella poisoning is to cook
all poultry thoroughly and to
refrigerate food immediately!
Purchasing kosher poultry will
not spare you from the chances
of becoming ill.
