Israeli Panel
To Investigate
Shin Bet Action
Jerusalem (JTA) — A three-
man judicial commission to
investigate alleged miscon-
duct by the General Security
Services (GSS), also known as
Shin Bet, was appointed by
Supreme Court President
Meir Shamgar last week. He
acted at the formal request of
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir.
The panel is headed by
Justice Moshe Landau, a
former President of the
Supreme Court. Its other
members are State Comp-
troller Judge Yaacov Maltz
and Gen. (Res.) Yitzhak Hofi,
a former head of Mossad,
Israel's external intelligence
agency.
The Cabinet voted to in-
itiate a judicial inquiry into
the GSS following charges
that it fabricated evidence
and extracted a confession by
illegal means to obtain the
conviction by a military
tribunal in 1981 of former-
Israel Defense force officer
Izat Nafsu on charges of
treason and espionage.
Nafsu, 32, a Circassian
soldier was sentenced to 18
years' imprisonment. He was
released last May by order of
the Supreme Court, which
overturned his conviction and
upheld his charges against
the GSS.

Violence In
Territories
Jerusalem (JTA) — A
15-year-old Palestinian boy
was killed and six people were
wounded by an Israel Defense
Force patrol in Nablus last
week as anti-Israel violence
erupted in the administered
territories on the 20th
anniversary of the Six-Day
War.
The victim, Azzam Al-
Arandi, was killed when the
patrol opened fire after com-
ing under a hail of stones in
the Nablus marketplace. An
IDF spokesman said the sol-
diers fired into the air and Al-
Azzam was hit by a stray
bullet as he stood on an
upper-story balcony.
The day after his funeral,
Nablus was closed down by a
commercial strike. Strikes
called in Ramallah and East
Jerusalem were only partly
effective and attempts to
organize strikes elsewhere
failed. But there were ston-
ings and gasoline-bomb at-
tacks throughout the ter-
ritory.
