Guarded Hope
For Latin Jews

New York - An expert on
the Jewish communities in
Central and South America
expressed guarded optimism
regarding their Jewish con-
tinuity.
Jacobo Kovadloff, AJC
committee's director for
South American affairs and
Spanish media, said that "the
Jewish communities in Latin
America are integrated into
the general communities. In
general, with the exception of
Nicaragua, the relations with
Israel are cordial and nor-
mal."
Nevertheless, Kovadloff
added, despite the atmos-
phere of freedom and
pluralism that characterizes
the rebirth of democracies in
most Latin American coun-
tries, several problems cause
anxiety and fear.
"Terrorist and narcotics
groups," he said, "are grow-
ing in Peru, Colombia and
Central America. The painful
economic and financial condi-
tions in all these countries
are producing unemployment,
turmoil and violence."
Moreover, the tremendous
external debt and the cur-
rency crisis have not found
any solutions. As a result,
Latin American countries
looking for new markets have
established strong links with
Arab countries and the Soviet
Union.

Bibles Sent
To Soviet Union

New York - Five
thousand copies of a 1902
Hebrew-Russian Bible, origi-
nally printed in Vilna (now
Vilnius, capital of Lithuania)
in 1902, were air-shipped to
Moscow last week by the Ap-
peal of Conscience Founda-
tion. According to Rabbi Ar-
thur Schneier, ACF
president, "There is increas-
ing recognition by Soviet
authorities that 'religion is
here to stay' in the USSR and
that the government must
meet the needs of religious
believers."
