When Captain Harry 0.
Machus and the 1st Armored
Division rumbled off to fight
the Germans in North Africa,
Elaine would hear little from or
about him until 1945.
It began when his tank was
shot out from under him .. .
and the Germans left Harris for
dead . . . He almost escaped but
was captured and taken to an
Italian prison camp . . . While
being transferred to another
camp, Harris wriggled out of an
upper window as the train pass-
ed over mile-high precipices .. .
and he dangled outside as the
train roared over a bridge and
right by guards obviously look-
ing the other way or very near-
sighted . . . before dropping to
freedom in the Italian Alps.
With 30,000 francs sewn in-
to the lining of his coat (it had
been payday the day before
Harris' tank was hit) . . . he liv-
ed in deserted shepherd
shelters with another
American who had also escaped
. . . Harris was recaptured in
1944 and sent to a prison camp
in Poland . . . That fall,-with the
Russian Army closing in, the
Germans began to march their
1,500 prisoners to Germany in
30-below temperatures . . . And
by then, someone had taken his
franc-lined coat.
On the second day of the
march, however, Harris ducked
into a barn and even though
the Germans riddled the barn
with machine-gun fire they
somehow missed him . . . He
had escaped again . . . this time
for good, though his adventure
was hardly over as he began
walking the 300 miles across
Poland hoping to get through
the retreating German lines
and behind the Russian Army.
Meanwhile, Elaine really
didn't know if he was even alive
until she received a telegram
confirming that Major Machus
was coming home.
Harris Machus has retired
. . . but the tradition of quality
food, service and decor is
continuing with three partners
. . . son Robert, chairman of the
board . . . Martin Kreger, presi-
dent and chief operating officer
. . . and John Wood, executive
vice president and general
manager . . . Kreger has been
with Machus Restaurants over
28 years . . . and Wood 22 years.
Two years ago, John Wood in-
stituted a training program
that has deserved much merit
. . . All employees are brought
to one central unit for a 15-hour
program that includes slides,
audio-visual presentations, lec-
tures and testing.
Another big member of the
new team is Executive Chef
Leopold Schaeli, one of only 24
certified master chefs in the
United States . . . Schaeli join-
ed the Machus organization in
1975 as its corporate executive
chef, the title he holds today
with direct responsibility for
the Machus Red Fox, a peren-
