Cong. Beth Shalom will present
its annual Frank Friedman
Memorial Concert at 8 p.m.
Thursday at Beth Shalom. Folk
singer Oscar Brand will offer a
celebration of Jewish-American
life through song, "Welcome to
America?'
In conjunction with the con-
cert, Gallery Yakir will offer an
art exhibit at 7 p.m.,
highlighting works of such
Israeli artists as sculptor
Aharon Bezalel and painters
Avraham and Hannah Yakin,
and Farideh.
Brand, host of New York
WCNY radio's award-winning
Folksong Festival, has collected
Emmy, Peabody and Edison
radio and TV awards for his
work on hundreds of shows.
An afterglow is planned.
Guests may view the art ex-
hibit after the concert.
The concert, sponsored by the
Friedman Family in memory of
Frank Friedman, is open to the
public without charge. Reserv-
ed seating is available for
benefactors, patrons, sponsors

Jewish Playwright
Wins Commission
New York — Playwright Mat-
thew Witten has been named
the recipient of the 1987 Play
Commission awarded by the
Council of Jewish Theatres
(CJT), a consortium founded
and administered by the Na-
tional Foundation for Jewish
Culture.
The CJT Commission will
enable Witten to complete his
play Dancing on Plates. The
comedy, selected from among
80 submissions, concerns three
ancestral Jewish spirits who
compete for the soul of Jake, a
young writer. The commission
includes an award of $3,000
and production at CJT member
theatres.
A resident of Boston, Witten
is the author of 11 plays.
