THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Paul Stanley talks about how he got into comedy.
interviews as well as features
with entertainers.
Soon he began promoting and
schlepping around visiting,
nationally-known comedians,
and as a result of meeting and
socializing with them, he got
the bug to try it out himself.
He began by going to "open
mike nights," usually Monday
evenings at Ridley's Comedy
Castle or the Comedy Crossing,
where aspiring comedians can
try their stuff. From these ex-
periences he developed an act
and a style, focusing on such
things as singles bars, relation-
ships and the rigors of everyday
life. He admits, however, get-
ting his stand-up act together
was not an easy task.
"I went through a period of
totally bombing because I was
trying to find my niche. What
you learn about comedy is you
never want to bomb. It's the
most embarrassing,
humiliating thing you can do."
He opend up his own club,
Knock Knocks at the former
Ark West Lanes, and played
there for a couple of years.
Stanley dropped out of com-
edy for a while and founded a
company, P.S. Productions, Inc.,
in West Bloomfield, of which he
is president and creative direc-
tor. His company ties in a talent
with a corporation, for example,
to help promote that company's
products. Among his promo-
tions are: "Dodge Trucks
Presents Kenny Rogers,"
"Wrangler Country
Showdown" and "Dodge
Presents the Legends for Liber-
ty 'Erne Yet, the itch for perfor-
ming was still there and last
year he returned to the open
mike nights to try out new
material.
While on the road for his pro-
motions business Stanley tries
out his comedy in clubs in the
cities he's visiting. He talked
about a couple of his recent
trips.
"I just played Vegas. The In-
ternational . . . House of
Pancakes.
"I even played a place in
Alabama, which when I got
back here I was thinking it was
very nice to be back in the
United States." Stanley said the
best thing about being a come-
dian today is the number of
clubs in which to play. And, he
adds, there's more to being a
comedian than just telling a
joke.
"The whole object is to just
relax and look like you're hav-
ing a good time. But looking
like you're having a good time
takes a lot of work. And when
they say timing — you always
walk around when you first
become a comedian (and say)
`Well, it's timing' — you don't
know what the hell you're talk-
ing about. Timing. But you
learn because it's not just tim-
ing of when you say the joke, it's
how you say the joke, what your
expressions are, what you've
left out, where the pauses are
and it's a lot of work and it's fun
when you're getting real good
at it."
