HMC Leak
Litigants Meet

The parties to the Hoalocaust
Memorial Center law suit met
Tuesday and agreed to continue
consultations in an effort to
"reach an amicable solution,"
according to a joint statement
issued by the litigants.
United Jewish Charities, an
arm of Federation, filed suit in
Oakland County Circuit Court
April 23 to force HMC's ar-
chitect, Siegal/TI uomaala Asso-
ciates, and its builder, Cronk
and Tocco, Inc., to repair leaks
at the center.
The suit is now in "abeyance,"
the statement said. Papers have
not been served. No date has
been set for another meeting.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin sent a
message of condolence Tuesday
to U.S. Defense Secretary
Caspar Weinberger for the
deaths of American sailors
aboard the USS Stark, a guid-
ed missile frigate severely
damaged by a missile fired by
an Iraqi aircraft in the Persian
Gulf Sunday night. The death
toll aboard the Stark has been
put at 37 with two men
missing.
Rabin, at a press conference
Tuesday, recalled the Israel Air
Force attack of June 8, 1967 on
the U.S. Navy ship Liberty off
the Sinai coast at the height of
the Six-Day War, which took
the lives of 34 crewmen and in-
jured 171.
Israel had given ample war-
ning days earlier to the U.S. to
withdraw the Liberty, a World
War II Victory-type freighter
converted to an electronic
surveillance or "spy" ship, from
the war zone. The Stark had no
warning.

Canada Calls
For Reparations

Montreal (JTA) — Joe
Clark, secretary of state for
external affairs, has called on
East Germany to pay com-
pensation to former German
Jews now living in Canada
for the confiscation of their
property by the Nazis during
World War II.
Clark, who requested some
$4 million while visiting East
Berlin, told East Germany's
leader, Erich Honecker, that
Canada supports a World
Jewish Congress call for a
moral payment for wrongs in-
flicted by the Nazis during
the Holocaust.
