Labor Zionism
makes a difference

Our Leaders

David Ben.Gurion and Golda Meir

Made a Difference

Our Platform Includes:

• Religious pluralism — the right of all Jews to choose the manner in which they
express their Judaism: Orthodox or secular, Reform, Conservative or Reconstructionist.

• A commitment to social justice, including women's rights, civil rights of minorities,
and opposition to national chauvinism, racism and religious fanaticism.

• Commitment to Israel's security through mutual recognition between Israel and
her neighbors.

• Development of Galilee and Negev as priority of Settlement Department.

• Reorganization of the WZO and the Jewish Agency.

Under the leadership of the Israel Labor movement, the Jewish State was born.
Labor Zionism today is a dynamic movement capable of meeting today's
challenges without losing sight of yesterday's vision.

cooperate with them. The com-
munity sorely needs better teen
programs and the Jewsish Com-
munity Center is in the front
line on this."

The Fresh Air Society has
hired a B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization international of-
ficial to be its executive direc-
tor. Sam Fisher, who has head-
ed international programs for
BBYO for the last ten years,
will replace Steve Makoff this
summer. Makoff is leaving the
Fresh Air Society to become the
first director of camps for the
Washington, D.C. Jewish
community.

Fisher has been based in
Israel for ten years, handling
BBYO programs in Israel and
Europe, including teen trips
from the U.S. to Israel.
It was learned this week that
Fresh Air's associate executive

director, Robert Lipsitz, will
also leave the agency this sum-
mer. Lipsitz has been named
director of the State of
Michigan's camp program for
juvenile offenders. Lipsitz has
worked at the Fresh Air Socie-
ty for 17 years.
The Jewish Community
Center is continuing its search
for an associate director to
replace Scott Brown, who left in
November. Former Detroiter Al
Freedman was hired to fill the
position, but suffered a heart
attack and will not be taking
the job. JCC Executive Director
Dr. Morton Plotnick said he has
started the search process
again, "looking for the right
fit."

Lag B'Omer Parade,
Carnival At Center

The Lubavitch Foundation
and the Jewish Community
Center will sponsor a Lag
B'Omer parade, 2 p.m. Sunday,
at the Jewish Center in West
Bloomfield. The parade will
feature marching bands, floats
and clowns. Area school
children are invited to par-
ticipate. Refreshments will be
served at a brief program

Black Museum
Vandalism Hit

The Detroit Chapter of the
American Jewish Committee
has condemned the vandalism
at the Museum of African-
American History over the
weekend.
David Jaffe, president, said
the chapter "is saddened and
outraged by the vicious, racist
vandalism of the Museum of
African-American History in
Detroit. This new museum
represents pride in black
culture, heritage and history,
and demonstrates strengths of
our diverse society."
Jaffe noted that the vandals
painted swastikas, symbols of
the Nazi Holocaust and hatred
of Jews. "These attacks are
directed against all of us," he
said. "A slur against blacks or
any other ethnic or religious
group must be taken as a slur
against Jews and other
minorities as well. All of our
communities join in condemna-
tion of this tragic incident,
those who perpetrated it and
those who support or tolerate it.
We must redouble our efforts
against injustice, racism and
civic violence." ,

following the parade. Following
the program there will be a car-
nival hosted by the Jewish
Community Center.
Lag B'Omer commemorates
the death of Rabbi Shimon Ben
Yochai. It also marks the cessa-
tion of the plague which ravag-
ed the Jews in Israel almost
2,000 years ago during the time
of Rabbi Akiva. The holiday is
traditionally devoted to
children and is celebrated with
picnics, outings, games and
contests.
There is no charge for the
parade or program. In case of
rain, there will be an indoor
program at the Center. Pro-
gram coordinator is Rochel
Wineberg. For information, call
the Lubavitch Foundation,
