Shawn Lavetter
Twins Ceremony

DR. SEYMOURE BALAJ

Foot Specialist

Shawn Lavetter will twin
the observance of his bar
mitzvah celebration at Cong.
Beth Shalom Synagogue at 9
a.m. Saturday with Alexan-
der Gilman, son of Boris and
Evgenia Gilman of Gomelsky
Oblast, USSR. Shawn is the
son of Mark and Elaine
Lavetter of Southfield.
In 1979, the Gilmans
applied for exit visas. Having
had no access to military or
scientific secrets, they did not
anticipate any problems or
complications. They simply
wished to join their family
living in Israel, including
Gilman's _parents and Mrs.
Gilman's father. However,
permission was denied on the
grounds that some of Mrg.
Gilman's relatives were re-
maining in the USSR.
Both Gilmans lost their
jobs. Despite this harassment,
the- family reapplied for exit
visas in April 1981.

Alexandra Offengenden is
the daughter of Boris and
Rita Offengenden of Kiev,
USSR. The parents work as
engineers.
Relatives in Israel sought
the family's exit in 1983. Re-
fusal was on the grounds that
Mrs. Offengender may have
been exposed to classified in-
formation at a job she left six
years before her application
to emigrate.
