Mother-Daughter Duo
Performs For Women

The mother and daughter
duo-piano team of Sylvia
Barr and Rochelle Barr will
present a classical music pro-
gram entitled, "Four Hands
in Two Piano Time" at the
Temple Beth El Sisterhood
installation luncheon on May
20 at noon at Temple Beth
El.
At 15, the former Sylvia
Stone was a graduate concert
piano student studying under
the late Dr. Alle D. Zuidema.
At Cass Technical High
School Music Department,
she also was an accomplished
harp student. She was chosen
to represent Detroit and
played the piano with the
National High School Or-
chestra in Dallas, Tex., under
the direction of Joseph E.
Maddy, the founder of Inter-
lochen.
During the Depression she
was forced to give up her
concert aspirations and be-
come a piano teacher. Re-

cently she has taught the
piano only to her own
grandchildren. She is a
teacher of the Hebrew lan-
guage and has, also, prepared
hundreds of young men and
women for bar and bat
mitzvah.
Rochelle Barr began her
piano studies with Dr.
Zuidema and then continued
with the late Dr. Edward
Breclshall. She was the May
Festival soloist with her high
school orchestra. Later while
touring the Scandinavian
countries she played com-
poser Edward Grieg's own
piano at his home in Trol-
dhaugen, Norway. Presently
she plays the organ and is
the assistant organist at
Temple Beth El.
Freda Mendelson will nar-
rate the musical program.
Paid reservations are due
at Temple Beth El, 7400
Telegraph, Birmingham,
48010, by Tuesday.
