Blood

ally had episodes of anemia,
particularly during her
childbearing years, but says
once one's blood levels are
stable and a physician gives
the go-ahead, it's safe to do-
nate.
Virginia Eberhart, Ameri-.
can Red Cross acting head
nurse, says, "Everyone arriv-
ing at a blood drive auto-
matically has their hemoglo-
bin tested. Our standards are
high. A woman's hemoglobin
count must be at least 121/2
grams; a man's must be 13%.
In some cases, that's as much
as one gram higher than
physicians would deem nor-
mal or healthy."
Who is an appropriate
donor?
"Any male or female at
least 17 years old and 110
pounds is accepted. The gen-
eral outside age is 70 years
old, but a previous donor
with a doctor's permission —
or, I should add, a healthy
first-time donor — is also
very welcome."
Paula Scheuer recently
helped coordinate a sponsor
recognition luncheon in
which 500 Southeastern
Michigan area blood drive
coordinators were honored,
among them B'nai B'rith and
B'nai B'rith Women. "One of
the ways we believe we can
strengthen the region's blood
drives is to encourage smaller
groups to cosponsor events
and attract their combined
memberships.
Diana Blauer concurs. "A
lot of local Jewish organiza-
tions have expressed interest.
Geography has always been
mentioned as a reason B'nai
B'rith and B'nai B'rith
Women might be attracting
more people from the Oak
Park and Southfield areas
and not reaching com-
munities like Farmington
Hills and West Bloomfield.
Joining forces would be one
way to go."
