AUDETTE CADILLAC, INC.

Meanwhile, senior U.S. of-
ficials said that the just-
concluded Palestine National
Council meeting in Algiers
was likely to further com-
plicate the effort to revive
Arab-Israeli peace nego-
tiations.
But the Americans insisted
that they would still continue
to try to advance the peace
process, despite that latest
complication.
"The search for peace in the
Middle East will go forward,"
State Department spokes-
man Charles Redman said,
when asked about the Algiers
meeting.
"From what we know thus
far of the results of the recent
PNC meeting," he continued,
"they are not encouraging. As
the forgotten victims of the
violence and turmoil in the
region, the Palestinian people
would be among the prime
beneficiaries of a peace settle-
ment."
Other U.S. officials said
that PNC meeting was likely
to put additional pressure on
Jordan's King Hussein to
demonstrate that he remains
a viable alternative to resolv-
ing the Palestinian question.
American officials com-
plained that PLO chairman
Yasser Arafat had once again
opted for PLO unity over pro-
gress in the peace process and
potentially concrete benefits
for the Palestinians living
under Israeli military occupa-
tion, in the refugee camps of
Lebanon and elsewhere.
