'U.S. Jews Have
Role In. Peace'

Washington (JTA) — The
Jordanian ambassador to the
United States says that the
American Jewish community
is a decisive factor in the
Middle East peace process,
with the ability to either
realize an international Mid-
dle East conference, and thus
"make a great contribution to
achieving a just and lasting
peace in Middle East," or to
prevent this from occurring.
Mohamed Kamal, writing
in an editorial which ap-
peared simultaneously in
Sunday's Washington Post-
andJerusalem Post, says that
he is very impressed by the
"dedication to justice and
peace" of prominent Ameri-
can Jews and that he believes
that they, "backed by the
great power of American na-
tional support," not only can
provide Israel with reassur-
ance but also serve "the good
of their country."
The combination of the two
forces (the U.S. and the
American Jewish community)
which together Kamal credits
with developing Israel into
"the major regional power it
is today," is the only means
by which "Israel will realize
that its real security lies not
in an isolated existence but
in peaceful co-existence with
its neighbors in the region."
Israel, Kamal said, "cannot
continue to be imposed on the
region" but "must be accepted
by the Arabs," through peace
prospects that depend on
three principles: "that the oc-
cupation of land and
hegemony over people by
force is inadmissible"; "that
peace can only be negotiated
with the participation of all
parties" to the conflict, in-
cluding the Palestinians; and
"that every country in the
region, including Israel, must
be guaranteed the security of
its sovereign existence.
Kamal blamed the pro-
Israel lobby in Congress for
denying American support to
any country perceived as Is-
rael's enemy, including coun-
tries with long-standing
friendly ties with America,
such as Jordan and Saudi
Arabia.
