Louis M. Elliman

Ground breaking is to begin
May 27 on Wayne State Univer-
sity's Louis M. Elliman Clinical
Research Building, to be
located on the corner of Can-
field and Brush streets.
Elliman's $2 million donation
to the university's school of
medicine last year formed the
base of funding for the new
building. The capital campaign
to raise funds to complete and
furnish the building will be
launched at the May 15
Heritage Society Dinner.
Elliman, 90, immigrated to
the United States from his
native Ireland at age 14. Before
his retirement, he operated the
Elliman Steel Co. In 1965 he
planted a 10,000 tree forest in
the Judean Hills near
Jerusalem.

Rail Extension
Approved

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Cabinet approved plans Sun-
day to extend Israel's railroad
system southward to the Red
Sea port of Eilat and
authorized the ports
authority to raise the neces-
sary funds.
The plan, proposed by
Transport Minister Haim
Corfu, was opposed by two of
his Likud colleagues, Hous-
ing Minister David Levy and
Minister of Science and
Technology Gideon Patt, who
argued that the rail line
would be an expensive "white
elephant."
It is intended to carry
potash from the Dead Sea
Works to Israel's south-
ernmost port and to haul coal
imports from South Africa
and Australia. Coal is now
shipped via Mediterranean
ports. The rail extension
would not serve passengers.

Beginning Satitrday, May 2, and on the following three Saturdays,
Tapper's will hold an in-store drawing for thousands of dollars
worth of fabulous prizes, including the Grand Prize—a $1,000
