and pre-natal-17 months
classes at the Center, Greene
said the concept behind Fam-
ily Spot is nothing new.
She said she learned about
such a program during a visit
to the Cleveland Jewish Cen-
ter, where . it is already in
progress. "It was so wonder-
ful there. I wanted to bring it
here. It's very successful in
Cleveland."
She said she saw a need for
the Family Spot when she
found that parents with in-
fants waiting for older chil-
dren in classes had no place
to go while they waited. With
the advent of the Family
Spot, they will have a place
not only to wait but to meet
with professionals in the
areas of child development,
pediatric medicine, dentistry
and Jewish holiday celebra-
tions and observances.
Sinai Hospital of Detroit
and the nearby Huron Valley
Hospital are providing
health-care professionals for
the program.
Aimed at making parent-
ing more fun and enriching,
the program this year will
only be open for infants age
12 months and younger.
Greene said she hopes to ex-
pand the program to include
children up to age 2.
Mothers already participat-
ing in Center classes for chil-
dren 0-12 months may attend
the daily Family Spot drop-
ins free of charge. Newcomers
must pay a nominal charge,
and will be encouraged to
enroll in ongoing classes.
A Family Spot session in
room 331 will immediately
follow the Toddler Gym
classes (six-12 months and
12-17 months) in room 332.
Pre-natal and post-natal
exercise classes will all be
held in the Family Spot with
a class or activity for new
mothers or mothers-to-be
immediately following.
Greene is excited about the
new program, and said she
hopes it can be expanded
next year. But it depends on
the community's response."
