Israel War Memorial Day
(Yom Hazikaron) will mark
the beginning of the
community-wide observance
of Israel Independence Day
(Yom HaAtzmaut). The pub-
lic commemoration service,
sponsored by the Israeli
community, will take place at
Adat Shalom Synagogue, 9:30
p.m. May 2.
Jewish Welfare Federation
President Dr. Conrad L. Giles
will be the speaker.
Also on the program are
the presentation of colors; Is-
raeli Army officer Menashe
Shemesh, lighting the memo-
rial torch; Rabbi Robert Ab-
ramson, Yizkor; Cantor Larry
Vieder, El Moleh Rachamim;
as well as poems and musical
presentations.
Representatives of Hillel
Day School, Akiva Hebrew
Day School and Adat Shalom
Synagogue will take part in
the program, and music will
be provided by flutist Nikolai
Lemberg, accompanied by
Carol Lesser.
The Birmingham Temple
Adult Volunteer Choir, led by
Ann Kutnick, will also per-
form.
Israel Independence Day
activities, sponsored by the
Jewish Welfare Federation,
Jewish Community Center
and Jewish Community
Council, will include a day-
long celebration May 3 at the
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield.
The festivities begin at 2
p.m., with a Knowledge of Is-
rael Quiz Bowl for 6th and
7th graders. Students repre-
senting 15 Jewish day and
afternoon schools will par-
ticipate.
At 2:30 p.m., children age
10 and under can take part

an El Al airplane-making
contest.
Adults can learn tradi-
tional folk dances from Uri
Segal, and Israeli food will be
available.
The Center also will host a
special showing of a film on
the history of Zionism, Pillars
of Fire. The one-hour seg-
ment will be shown at 2 and
3 p.m.
Senator Carl Levin will
brief members of Detroit area
Jewish youth groups on Is-
rael, the Middle Ea -st and
other contemporary issues at
4 p.m.
Federation, Council and
the Center are also sponsor-
ing a performance by Israeli
folksinger Hanan Yovel, May
6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jewish
Community Center's
Shiffman Hall. Tickets are
available in advance at the
Center, or the Jewish Com-
munity Council office at
United Hebrew Schools.

in town and it's
geared not for the
trendies, but for parents of
infants.
Called the Family Spot, the
Jewish Community Center
pilot program will provide
parents and parents-to-be
with a network of support,
educational programs and ac-
tivities to enrich their par-
enting experiences.
Meeting in room 331 at the
main Jewish Center in West
Bloomfield, the Family Spot
will conduct classes from 11

a.m. to noon Monday though
Friday. There will be a
Bagels and Babies program
with a speaker one Sunday a
month at 11 a.m. and two
drop-ins, 11 a.m.-noon Tues-
days and 10-11 a.m. Fridays,
all beginning Monday.
A special grand opening
celebration will take place 11
a.m. - 1 p.m. Sunday at the
Center. Pediatrician Dr.
Ralph Cash will speak on "It
Doesn't Matter What It Is, It
Should Only Be Healthy!"
Brunch will be served, and
admission is free.
Jo Greene is the coor-
dinator of the program. Re-
sponsible for all family pro-
gramming, holiday activities
