Herzog Visits
Death Camp

Bergen-Belsen (JTA) —
President Chaim Herzog of
Israel, reciting the words of
the psalmist, "My pain is
with me forever," unveiled a
rock quarried in Jerusalem at
the site of this former concen-
tration camp Monday and
dedicated it to the memory of
those who perished in the
Holocaust.
"I do not bring forgiveness
with me, nor forgetfulness,"
declared Herzog, the first
president of Israel to visit
Germany. "The only ones
who can forgive are the dead.
The living have no right to
forget. Thus I will surely re-
member, with a heavy heart."
The brief, moving cere-
mony at Bergen-Belsen fol-
lowed by a few hours Her-
zog's arrival at Bonn where
he was greeted with a 21-gun
salute and personally wel-
comed by President Richard
Von Weizsaecker of the Fed-
eral Repubic.
Several hundred people as-
sembled here, including
Holocaust survivors and West
German dignitaries, headed
by Von Weizsaecker and the
prime minister of Lower
Saxony, Ernst Albrecht.
Many fought back tears as
the El Mole Rachamin, the
prayer for the dead, was
chanted by a cantor.
At the ceremony, a
Holocaust survivor, Hadasa
Rosensaft, recognized Herzog
as one of the officers of the
British army which liberated
the concentration camp. She
burst into tears and em-
braced the President.

Shimon Peres
\, Visits Spain

Madrid (JTA) — Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres re-
) ceived a warm welcome when
he arrived here last Sunday
for a two-day official visit,
the first by a senior Israeli
Minister to Spain since the
two countries established dip-

lomatic relations more than a
year ago.
Peres met Monday with
King Juan Carlos and Prime
Minister Felipe Gonzalez. Ac-
cording to Israeli sources, the
King promised to do what he
can to advance Middle East
peace and Gonzalez said
Spain would use its contacts
in the Arab world to try to
advance the process.
Peres urged the Spanish
leaders to support an interna-
tional conference for Middle
East peace, an issue that has
sharply divided the Israeli
government.
The New York Times
quoted Peres as saying that
the Soviet Union must let a
minimum of 30,000 Jews
emigrate annually before Is-
rael would consent to Soviet
participation in an interna-
tional conference.
Peres said that Moscow
must also resume diplomatic
relations with Israel.
The Israeli foreign minister
spent his final day in Spain
touring Jewish landmarks in
Toledo, a cradle of Spanish-
Jewish culture 500 years ago.
In pouring rain, he visited
the city's two oldest
synagogues, El Retreto, built
in the 14th Century and now
a national monument, and
Santa Madrid de la Blanca,
which dates from the 12th
Century and was converted to
a Catholic church after Spain
expelled its Jews in 1492.

Court Rejects
Demjanjuk
Panel Appeal

1bl Aviv (JTA) — An appeal
by defense counsel for alleged
war criminal John Demjan-
juk that the three judge panel
hearing the case disqualify
itself for alleged bias against
the defendant was rejected by
the Supreme Court last week.
Justice Meir Shamgar,
speaking for the high court,
said there was no basis to the
defense claims and that in
fact the Jerusalem district
court judges trying Demjan-
juk had displayed patience
and tolerance toward the ac-
cused and his attorneys.
Shamgar said neither
hostility nor bias was evident
in the judges' frequent in-
terventions which were all
pertinent to matters at hand
and were needed to clarify
complicated questions put to
witnesses.
Shamgar acknowledged
that there had been mis-
understandings and subj ec-
tive feelings on the part of the
defense because of difficulties
of translation and the sen-
sitive nature of the trial but
he found that the rights of
the defense team and of the
accused were not violated.
