Appeal Made At
UN For Syrian
Jewish Women
Geneva (JTA) — An appeal
was heard at the United Na-
tions Human Rights Com-
mission meeting here last
week on behalf of Jewish
women in Syria who want to
emigrate because they cannot
find spouses in their small
community.
The issue was raised by
David Lettman, represen-
tative of the World Union for
Progressive Judaism which
has non-governmental status
at the UN. He appealed par-
ticularly to women members
of the various delegations and
among the observers to speak
out for those few hundred
Jewish women.
He said there are at present
about 250 Jewish women of
child-bearing age who are
unable to marry in Syria
because of the demographic
disequilibrium in the Jewish
community — a shortage of
unattached males. Their only
solution is to emigrate, Lett-
man said, but Syrian Jews are
banned from leaving the
country.
He recalled that in April
1977, as a result of President
Jimmy Carter's meeting with
President Hafez Assad of
Syria in Geneva, 14 young
Jewish women were allowed
to leave Syria for New York
where there is a sizeable
Jewish community of Syrian
origin. Their object was
matrimony. Since then, only
a few Jewish women have
been allowed to leave, Lett-
man said.

in downtown Moscow for the
