LIKE NO ONE ELSE CAN DO IT

six or more interested people."
Facilitators do not have to be
experts on a particular subject.
They are actually working
members of the group. The
group plans and carries out its
own learning experiences. For
instance, each study group de-
cides the direction for the topic,
the meeting format the texts
required and how often meet-
ings will take place. The Cen-
ter staff makes certain there's
a room available for the meet-
ing.
Some of the study groups at
IRP are "Arts, Literature and
Theatre," "Film Study,"
"Flora, Fauna and the Michi-
gan Environment," "Travel,"
"Yiddish," "American-
Jewish-Israel Relationships,"
"Ethics in Medicine" and
"Media Watch I and II."
"One of our members is in-
terested in philosophy and is
trying to develop a discussion
group in that area," says Sam-
son. "We're also working on
starting a computer group."
After serving for one year as
a facilitator, Irving Panush
was ready to step down from
his position for the study group
on "The Bible As a Natural
History of the Jewish People."
"We finished the Five Books of
Moses and I thought that
would be the end," Panush
says. "Wrong. We're moving
right along now to 'Prophets.' "
When asked if it is difficult
to be a facilitator for a group
like this, Panush replied that a
facilitator merely keeps the
group going. "It's really not dif-
ficult. The only thing ever at-
tacked in these groups are
ideas, never personalities."
Besides learning and being
intellectually stimulated, the
general consensus of its mem-
bers is that IRP has great par-
ties and special events. "The
socialization within the insti-
tute has become one of the
spin-off benefits for its mem-
bers," explains Miriam
Sandweiss, director of the Cen-
ter's Senior Adult Department.
The activity committee
planned a New Year's party, a
party celebrating the signing
of the institute's constitution
and special field trips to con-
certs, movies and exhibits.
"Groups meet at both the
Jimmy Prentis Morris build-
ing in Oak Park and at the
Maple-Drake in West Bloom-
field," Sandweiss continues.
"The enthusiasm from the
study groups engenders
friendships at both facilities, in
study groups, and when the in-
stitute calls meetings as a
whole. It's a highly gratifying
experience to work with these
adults."
Part of the success of the in-
stitute is the ability of mem-
bers to address their needs
without using a formal cur-
riculum of study. As a result,
group members learn to use
their own experiences as their
primary resources.
