years on, is caused by a pro-
gressive thinning of the bones,
as calcium is lost from the
body.
Regular impact exercise has
been shown to somewhat
counter this condition by in-
' creasing the bone density. It is
the impact against the exercise
surface that produces this re-
sult.
Almost all regular exercise
will tell you that stress reduc-
tion is a main benefit of exer-
cising. In fact, there is a
physiological basis for this
claim. A chemical is released
into the brain, called
endorphin,- as one's workout
builds in intensity. The result-
ing "runner's high" produces a
feeling of well-being and re-
leases the stresses of the day.
Since it is more difficult to
elevate your heart rate with
non-impact moves, it follows
that it is difficult to build to the
intensity level necessary to re-
lease endorphins. For that re-
lease alone, many exercisers
prefer impact aerobics.
Ironically, one of the
greatest benefits of impact
aerobics is that it is easier to
perform safely. It is true that
impacting itself can be harm-
ful to the joints, but so can poor
bone alignment. It is much
easier to align bone over bone
during impact moves than dur-
ing many non-impact moves.
This may just be the fault of
current choreography in
aerobic dance classes, but as
things stand now the up-and-
down motion of impacting
allows for a natural and safe
bone alignment.
Non-impact routines, con-
versely, frequently involve
lateral moves, such as side
steps. Much care must be taken
with such moves so as not to
misalign ankles. Likewise, the
non-impact kick, a kick with-
out momentum, can snap the
knee, and further, the heavy
emphasis on upper body work
to carry the non-impact
aerobics load can do damage to
the upper body joints.
. This is not to say that non-
impact is of negligible value.
Quite the contrary. Non-
impact is also a sensible break
for full time impact aerobic de-
votees. Your joints do need a
rest. Also, different muscle
groups are emphasized during
the aerobic portions of each
class.
And, of course, non-impact
has been heaven-sent for those
nursing an injury or those
plagued with a chronic or per-

Impact Aerobics
vs. Non-Impact
To impact or not to impact,
that is the question facing
aerobic exercisers in the mid-
1980s. It's pretty confusing
when you walk into an exercise
facility and are faced with de-
termining not only what class
level is appropriate for you, but
also what impact level—non-
impact, low impact or high im-
pact.
You might remember maga-
zine articles, television reports
and general "talk" touting the
safety benefits of non-impact,
as well as warning of the dan-
gers inherent in impact moves.
Therefore, it's an easy decision;
you sign up for non-impact.
Right choice? Not necessarily.
If you are not injured or
injury-prone I think you are
cheating yourself out of some
important health and fitness
benefits provided by impact
aerobics.
Up until a couple of years
ago, impact or jumping
aerobics was the only way to
go. But due to poor exercise
surfaces (non-resilient floors)
and even poorer technique and
instruction, a large portion of
the exercising community ex-
perienced joint discomfort or
injury.
Thus, a new brand of
aerobics emerged to save the
day—non-impact or soft
aerobics. This one-foot-on-
the-ground no bounce ap-
proach to aerobics took stress
off those aching joints, while
still working the heart.
While this has all been to the
good, the current enchantment
with , non-impact aerobics has
obscured many of the benefits
of impacting.
The most basic benefit of im-
pact aerobics is the ability to
elevate your heart rate quickly
and effectively. Impacting
utilizes the large muscle
groups in both the upper and
lower body to make the heart
work hard.
Non-impact, on the other
hand, primarily depends on the
upper body movements to
pump up the heart. Obviously,
this is not as great a workload.
For those of ytiu interested in
reaching or maintaining peak
cardio-vascular condition, im-
pact aerobics is the surer route.
Impacting also increases
bone density (of major import
in the fight against os-
teoporosis). This disfiguring
and often crippling condition,
that is prevalent in women-
(and men too) from middle
