Aerobics

Continued from preceding page

man.ent injury. This form of
exercise has allowed them , to
enter the aerobic dance arena
for the first time.
The recent inclusion of non-
impact has but added versatil-
ity and value to aerobic dance.
But this should not over-
shadow the benefits and ex-
citement of impact aerobics.
Remember, no form of mean-
ingful exercise is 100 percent
safe. Safety depends to a large
extent on the instructor and
the teaching of good, clean
technique. For the injury free,
impact aerobics offers a great
way to stay in shape. Let's look
a little more closely at how to
keep impact aerobics safe. It
does require effort and concen-
tration, but so does any worth-
while athletic endeavor. In
fact, it's extremely useful to
regard aerobic dance as a sport
with certain skill require-
ments.
Foremost to aerobic safety is
proper alignment. This means
that the body's bones must be
stacked one on top of another.
There are a number of ways of
achieving this result. One way
is to point your toes when ex-
tending your legin a kick, knee
lift, etc. The foot then- lands
toe-ball-heel, keeping the
ankle in alignment and forcing
a straighter angle at the knee.
Another method of maintain-
ing clean alignment is to keep
the upper,body lifted through-
out the aerobic activity.
A third important means of
controlling alignment is by
contracting the muscles of the
buttocks and abdomen. This
girdle of muscle helps to lock
the posture into an upright
position. The devlopment of
adequate muscular strength
along with aerobic endurance
is the other major key to keep-
ing your aerobics safe. Joints
must be protected by a solid
support system of muscle to
keep them positioned properly.
Muscular strength is also
needed to move your body
smoothly and confidently
through various aerobic steps.

For example, a leg kick should
generate from the buttock
muscle of the working leg, not
from the lower leg or knee,
where it can cause a "snap."
You must be able to isolate the
muscle needed and apply it to
the task at hand. This takes
strength and training.
This all sounds like a tre-
mendous amount of work but it
is very conquerable if done in
small .doses. A qualified exer-
cise studio with informed in-
structors will gradually train
you to read your body and
make the necessary alignment
adjustments.
