serve as a reminder of "Kab-
dehu v'hashdehu?"
Under no circumstances
should Arab representatives
ever be treated with disrespect.
The desire is to meet with
them, to negotiate, to reach an
accord, to attain peace. Not, of
course, with those who at the
outset advocate Israel's de-
struction and express a hope, if
they should succeed, to drive
out of the Jewish State of Israel
those Jews who came to the
land after Nov. 2, 1917.
Nor should there ever be an
unkind word for the represen-
tative of the Vatican who re-
sides in the city with the
largest Jewish population in
the world. We respect him.
But the invitation to con-
sider the evenhandedness was
provided by the Cardinal him-
self. It is necessary to consider
seriously a New York Times
news story, dated Feb. 6, in
which Joseph Berger reported:
John Cardinal O'Connor
discussed his Middle East
trip yesterday with seven
American Moslem leaders
and said afterward that the
meeting was held to balance
one held two weeks ago with
Jewish leaders.
The 1-1/2-hour meeting at
the Cardinal's residence at
452 Madison Avenue was
seen by some of the Moslem
leaders as symbolically
strengthening their legiti-
macy in a country that they
suggested has been more
eager to embrace Jewish
leaders.
With the Cardinal stand-
ing at his side, Dr. -M. T.
Mehdi, secretary general of
the four-year-old National
Council on Islamic Affairs,
told reporters that the meet-
ing was significant because
it showed "America is no
longer a Jewish society," he
said.
At the news conference,
Cardinal O'Connor said he
felt it only "right and fair" to
meet with Moslem leaders
because he had visited Jor-
dan, a Moslem country, and
Israel. Meetings among
Christians, Jews and Mos-
lems are needed to advance
the cause of peace, he said.
Dr. Mehdi, the spokesman
for the delegation, does not
believe Israel should be a
Jewish state, but instead
should be reconstituted as a
Palestinian and Jewish
state with government by
majority rule. The concept
of a religious state, he said
at the news conference, "is
not quite kosher," a remark
'that drew a laugh from the
Cardinal.
The Cardinal, asked why
he would meet with a person
who does not support Is-
rael's right to exist as a
Jewish state, said, "I've met
with people who hold all
sorts of beliefs."
The Cardinal said that it
was often forgotten that the

Second Vatican Council's
Nostra Aetate document,
which sought to improve re-
lations between Catholics
and Jews, also "expressed
its ties with the Muslim
world." The Cardinal also
repeated a view he has often
stated recently: Americans
often stereotype Arabs as
terrorists or as "anti-Jewish
or anti-Christian."

The shock of it all will
surely pose serious ques-
tions directed at the Cardi-
nal. The amusement over
the "kosher" comment may
continue the appreciation
generally expressed for the
cleric's "sense of humor."
Does that give him the right
to create a platform for an
invited Moslem to advocate
the destruction of the
Jewish State?
The Cardinal's selection
of Mehdi as a spokesman for
the Moslems adds to the
consternation over the
entire issue. Simultaneously
with publication of Mehdi's
annihilation was his confes-
sion that he had an associa-
tion with the already inter-
nationally indicted criminal
Abu Nidal, whose crimes
were exposed in an impor-
tant NYTimes article by
Judith Miller. Reference to
that exposure with revela-
tions involving three Arab
nations in the outrageous
crimes — Syria, Lybia and
Iran — will be found on The
Jewish News page 2 of Jan.
16. Mehdi revealed his own
role in this letter which was
published in the NYTimes
Feb. 8:

Nidal is fully in agreement
with our position.
M. T. Mehdi
President, American-Arab
Relations Committee;
Secretary-General, Na-
tional
Council on Islamic Affairs
New York City
Such is the evenhandedness
that has unfortunately placed
the respected Cardinal in a
questionable role in relation to
the Middle East in his choice of
spokespeople in matters in-
volving an international dis-
pute.
The sad experience involv-
ing John Cardinal O'Connor
should cause Jewish leader-
ship to think twice before be-
coming involved in matters
like the Vatican's attitude on
Jerusalem and the assignation
of interpretation of it by the
Vatican's New York represen-
tative. This is where "Kabdehu
b'hashdehu becomes a vital
factor. "Kabdehu v'hashdehu,"
generally interpreted as "re-
spect and suspect," has other
translations in Hebrew lexi-
cons, such as "to treat some one
well, but yet not wholly trust
'him," and "respect all and sus-
pect all."
The pity of it all is the resort
to "evenhandedness," and
those who do usually utilize it
tongue in cheek. That's why it
becomes urgent to adhere to
the advice inherent in
"Kadehu v'hashdehu."

The Istanbul
Synagogue Massacre

Israel Backs
Officials On
Iran Arms Deal

I am one of the few per-
sons in the United States
who has engaged in lengthy
discussion with Abu Nidal
("The Istanbul Synagogue
Massacre: An Investiga-
tion," by Judith Miller, Jan.
4). During my visit last De-
cember to the Middle East,
seeking the release of the
hostages held in Lebanon, I
met with members of Abu
Nidal's Fatah Revolution-
ary Council. Not only did
they deny any connection
with the Istanbul massacre,
as Judith Miller states, they
also denounced the mas-
sacre, which Ms. Miller fails
to mention.
Sabry al-Banna (Abu Ni-
dal) may be "crazy," but he
is not stupid. To massacre
some elderly Jewish wor-
shippers is a violation of Is-
lam, as it is to the detriment
of Arab and Palestinian
political goals. Such ugly
events against Jews
strengthen Zionism, which
will become a greater threat
to the Arabs. As Arabs, we
are 100 percent opposed to
anti-Semitism. On this, Abu

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
Knesset's Foreign Affairs and
Security Committee stated
last week that there is no
reason to doubt the official
version of Israel's role in the
U.S:Iran arms deal.
The statement was issued
after two days of closed hear-
ings by the committee's In-
telligence Subcommittee.
Details of Israel's cooperation
with the U.S. in the arms
sales to Iran were provided by
David Kimche, former Direc-
tor General of the Foreign
Ministry, and Amiram Nir,
the Prime Minister's adviser
on counter-terrorism. Both of-
ficials appeared before the
subcommittee by special per-
mission of Prime Minister
Yitzhak Shamir.
Their testimonies apparent-
ly satisfied the Knesset
members that Israel acted in
the Iran arms sale as a loyal
ally of the United States and
at its specific request. The
Committee's statement made
no mention of Israel's alleged
involvement in transfering
proceeds of the arms sale .
