are "melted" and the filling is
relatively smooth. Remove
from the heat, and stir in the
walnuts if used.
Evenly spread the filling
over the bottom crust. Sprinkle
the reserved crumbs on top so
the dates are completely
covered, and press the crumbs
down gently with your finger-
tips so the top "crust" adheres
to the filling.
Bake in a preheated 375-
degree oven for about 25 to 30
minutes or until lightly
browned. Cool completely in
the pan on a rack; then cut into
squares. Makes 16 bars. *(To
make "old-fashioned" oats into
"quick" oats, just process them
slightly in a food processor or
blender.)
"CHINESE CHEWS"
3 /4 cup flour
3 /4 cup sugar
3 /4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 cup chopped dried dates
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup shredded coconut
3 large eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla extract
0 In a medium-sized bowl,
combine the flour, sugar and
baking powder. Stir in the
dates, walnuts and coconut.
Then add the eggs and vanilla
extract, and stir until
thoroughly combined. Spread
the batter in a greased or non-
stick spray-coated 9-inch
square baking pan. Bake in .a
preheated 325 degree oven for
20 to 25 minutes or until a cake
tester comes out clean. Cut into
16 small or 9 large squares.
(Note: For your own simple
make-ahead mix, combine in a
large plastic container or bag:
3 cups each flour- and sugar, 1
tbsp. baking powder, and 2
cups each dates, walnuts and
coconut. Mix thoroughly. Store
in the freezer. To prepare, beat
3 eggs with 1 tsp. vanilla
extract in a medium-sized
bowl. Add 3 cups of the mix,
and stir until combined. Bake
as above. This is enough mix
for four batches.)

In the exchange of fire with
the terrorists, one SLA
soldier was killed and three
others wounded.
The previous day, another
