late. We might find Hitler's
projections about Jews here to
be absurd and ridiculous. Un-
fortunately and tragically, the
consequences of Hitler's
thoughts and actions resulted
in the greatest tragedy in the
history of human civilization.

Bromberg and Small, in
Hitler's
their book
Psychopathology, write about
how Hitler's attempted eradi-
cation of the Jewish people was
directly linked with his at-
tempts to eradicate what the
Jewish people symbolically re-
presented within himself.

We are all too aware of the
tragic consequences that can
result from unrestrained
scapegoating, projecting and
stereotyping-Jews, as the vic-
tims of such massive, unre-
strained scapegoating, have
much to contribute to educat-
ing the world about the conse-
quences of prejudice and
hatred. Survivors of the
Holocaust consistently speak
out about the necessity of re-
membering to prevent further
Holocausts from occurring.
They act as a conscience for the
world, they serve a reminder of

what unrestricted prejudices
can do.
As Elie Wiesel recently
stated upon accepting the
Nobel Peace Prize, "I swore
never to be silent whenever
human beings endure suffer-
ing and humiliation. We must
always take sides. Neutrality
helps the oppressor, never the
victim. Silence encourages the
tormentor, never the tor-
mented."
What can be done? Perhaps
one possibility is that we adopt
the survivors' mission as our
own as well. That we speak out
against anti-Semitism and in-
justice against the Jewish
people. That we speak out
against prejudice and oppres-
sion in whatever forms we
might find it. Perhaps also we
need recognize that human be-
ings are susceptible to feelings
of prejudice and anger. It
herefore becomes important
to be sensitive as we encounter
tendencies toward blaming,
projecting and scapegoating in
others as well as in ourselves.
Defense mechanisms are nor-
mal in human life. When they
lead to destructiveness, it be-
comes possible for human-
beings to become inhuman.

Unfortunately, it is rhetoric
that Mr. Bienstock prefers in
his article. He says that Israel
would receive greater support
from ". . (a) fully democratic
state which recognizes no dis-
tinctions among its citizens on
the grounds of religion, and ac-
cords the Jewish religion com-
plete equality." This is the
United States, he implies.
There are many who would
strongly object to this state-
ment as it stands, but Mr.
Bienstock doesn't care whether
it is a true depiction or not. He
doesn't question it. Instead, he
wants the reader to know that
"the Rightwing Factor" is
against this kind of America,
and thus is a threat to a major-
ity of Jews in this country.
There are those who hold to
conservative, righwing views,

lost in this article. Would Mr.
Bienstock like to see Israel
adopt, without qualification,
the doctrine which would make
it "a fully democratic state
which recogizes no distinctions
among its citizens on the
grounds of religion" but would
accord Christianity, Islam and
Marxism "complete equality"?
Stop and think. Arafat and
most of the United Nations
would want precisely the same
thing. Israel would cease to
exist as a Jewish state.
Again, Mr. Bienstock says,
"It is not enough that we are
browbeaten and threatened by
the extreme right which tries
to put a religious coloration on
the American political process
and would make its own reli-
gious beliefs the law of the
land." This sounds completely
illegitimate, doesn't it? But at
what point does it become a
"crime," to use the PLO ter-
minology, for Israel to put a
Jewish coloration on the Is-
raeli political process and
make its own Jewish beliefs
the law of the land?
The facts are, there is no law
in this country which says that
Christians have to give money
to support Israel, vote for con-
gressmen that are pro-Israel or
meet with Israeli leaders to
discuss ways in which the gov-

There are a number of prob-
lems with Mr. Bienstock's arti-
cle, "The Rightwing Factor"
which appeared in your Dec. 5
issue. First, he makes refer-
ence to "American Jewry,"
"the Jewish majority"as if he
can truly speak for it. Like
many writers, he is implying
that as long as the majority
thinks a position is right or
moral, it has more validity,
more legitimacy than those
views which are not so held;
when in fact, the only correct
thing which can be said is that
the views of the majority are
simply more popular. How-
ever, popularity is not the basis
for an idea being right or moral
