New Year's Day.

Aviv (JTA) — Israel last
week was battling an epi-
demic of Asian flu which
claimed 89 lives during the
second half of November ac-
cording to the Health Min-
istry's epidemiology depart-
ment. The viral train is of the
Singapore or Taiwan variety,
a mutation of type prevalent
in the 1950's.
Young children and elderly
people are the most suscept-
ible, according to the Health
Ministry, the former because
they were not expose to the
previous onslaught. The
elderly are a high risk group
because they are more likely
to be suffering from chronic
respiratory problems, dia-
betes, heart or kidney disease,
cancer or suppressed immune
response.
The death, 40 in the third
week of November and 49 in
the last week, were from com-
plications arising from the
flu, Health Ministry sources
reported. Hospitals report
that in one week alone, as
many as 300 people a day
have sought medical atten-
tion for the illness.

New York — The education
department of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund is actively dis-
seminating a comprehensive
educational program in con-
junction with Tu B'shevat, the
Jewish New Year of the Trees,
which will fall on Feb. 14.
Dr. Solomon Goldman, di-
rector of JNF's education de-
partment, explained that Tu
B'shevat 5747 assumes special
significance for JNF, as this
year is a Sabbatical, or
Shmitta, year, during which
tree-planting activities are re-
stricted, according to the in-
junction in Leviticus, "The
seventh year shall be a sabbath
of rest unto the land . ."

New York — Harold M.
Jacobs, president of the Na-
tional Council of Young Israel,
urged caution upon other
Jewish organizations and
communal leaders in public
statements urging specific
steps designed to punish South
• Africa for its policy of apar-
theid.
While the Ypung Israel
leader unequivocally con-
demned "the repugnant apar-
theid policy," he urged those
concerned with the ulimate
welfare of those suffering in
South Africa to beware of
"simplistic protest actions that
. may actually magnify the in-
justices inflicted upon the in-
nocent victims of apartheid."
