time — resistance to any kind
of spiritual regimentation is
the keynote of the Maccabean
legacy.
If the Maccabees had sur-
rendered their faith and free-
dom to be like everyone else,
the history of mankind might
have taken a different turn.
Judaism would not have sur-
vived. There would have been
no Christianity or Islam. The
humanitarianism of the
Judeo-Christian biblical tradi-
tion would never have stirred
the conscience of mankind.
The legacy of the Maccabees
was centered in the name of
Chanukah, which means "re-
dedication." The little miracle
by which light was brought
back into the ancient
sanctuary of Jerusalem spoke
more eloquently of God's good-
ness and His delight those who
seek light and truth than all
the battlefield victories of the
Maccabees. And this is what
children — and the child-like
— remember as they kindle the
Chanukah candles this week.
I am not sorry that
Chanukah and Christmas fall
so closely together this year. It
gives us the chance to remind
Jews that Chanukah is not and
never has been a Jewish
Christmas. Christmas is for
Christians, Chanukah is for
Jews, for Chanukah has an al-
together different meaning.
The message of Chanukah is
the story of courage. When #
Judah Maccabee and his
brothers stood up against the
Syrians of old, they won not
only a military victory but the
respect of the world for Jewish
valor. They carved a new niche
for Jewish dignity and brav-
ery.
No other Jewish holiday,
major or minor, has done so
much to kindle the flame of
Jewish loyalty in the hearts of
young Jews as Chanukah has
done. Yet this holiday is ut-
terly unique. Who but Jews
would celebrate a tremendous
military victory with a sweet,
simple ceremony of lighting
candles and reciting brief
blessings? Can you imagine
the Soviets celebrating a mili-
tary victory with anything but
a big parade in Moscow Red
Square? Remember how Hitler
and Mussolini had their tanks
and guns and flags and sear-
chlights fingering the skies?
But Jews? Chanukah? Just
kindling eight candles on a
simple menorah at home is
enough.
There is something else.
Most other Jewish holidays in
generations past were cele-
brated with more piety and

fervor than nowadays. But not
Chanukah. Today Jews ob-

enthusiastically than any of
our ancestors ever did.
Chanukah used to be a minor
holiday. Today it is becoming a
' major one. Why?
Obviously, to counteract and
be something of an equivalent
to Christmas. But that was al-
ways so. The calendar year
after year guaranteed a De-
cember dilemma. Yet, there is
something else in our time: the
reawakening of Jewish consci-
entiousness, the modern mira-
cle of the State of Israel, the
bitter fighting that won the
right of Jews to survive as
Jews, the parallel of modern
Israelis with' the Maccabees.
And Entebbe? Who will ever
forget how the modern Mac-
cabees swooped down from the
skies to rescue their fellow
Jews?
Chanukah is becoming an
important Jewish holiday
again. It has much to tell us
about the values of moral cour-
age and love for Judaism.
