person, they're sharing what
they know ... (that they are
saying) We're here to convert
you,' even to the rabbi sitting
next to him."
"We were portrayed as
Jews who believe in Jesus
and that is certainly accu-
rate," Jacobs told The Jewish
News. "That communicates
more than `Shema Yisrael' at
this point. So I think that it's
even more up front."
Shema Yisrael. is "an
evangelistic ministry
(formed) to spread the Gospel
of Jesus Christ with an em-
phasis towards Jewish
people," according to the
group's articles of incorpora-
tion, filed with the state of
Michigan on June 23. The
report lists as Shema Yis-
rael's activities: "Evangelism,
churCh-planting activities,
teaching Bible studies, fun-
draising as needed." Loren
Jacobs, Harold Brickner and
Mark Kinzer are listed as
co-directors.
Jacobs himself offered a
variation on his group's pur-
pose and activities. Shema
Yisrael, he said, was "formed
to tell people about Jesus,
both Jews and Gentiles." Its
goal is to start a "syna-
gogue." Its activities include
handing out literature on the
streets, making television
appearances and "for those
who are interested, teach
them the scriptures."
Once on the national board
of "Jews For Jesus," Jacobs,
who came to Detroit only re-
cently, says his current group
is unaffiliated with other
organizations, locally or na-
tionally.
Despite this assertion, his
group's brochures and flyers
are identical with Jews for
Jesus materials.
Jacobs described his group
as "a gathering of Messianic
Jews who meet on Friday
nights."
These meetings take place
in a room in the Oak Park
Community Center, reserved
by the Northwest Fellowship,
an apparently ad hoc group.
About 30 people reportedly
attend regularly.
"Northwest Fellowship has
been renting that room for
awhile," Jacobs explained,
"and Haskell (Stone) has
been teaching on Friday
nights in Oak Park for years,
so basically they're just con-
tinuing to rent the room."
According to Allan Gale,
that Friday night congrega-
tion is only half-Jewish. "So
it's really an evangelical con-
gregation that welcomes
Jews."
When Kelly & Company,
under pressure from local
Jews, approached the Jewish
Community Council to
suggest someone to appear on
the program for balance, the
Council proposed Rev. Lyons.
