Odom urges singles to go
slowly. "Stay focussed on
your own thoughts and feel-
ings as opposed to trying 'to
please the other person," she
said. Kellman advises singles
to trust their instincts. "If it
doesn't feel right it's probably
not right." Levick ad-
monishes men and women to
"be real. It's okay to be vul-
nerable. It's refreshing when
you can meet an unpretenti-
ous individual who's straight,
open and honest. You have to
have the ability to be em-
pathetic, to cue into messages
from the other person. , Be
open-minded enough to know
you won't please everyone
and not everyone will please
you."
The singles, too, had their
own words of wisdom.
Komisar advises: "Don't get
into any situation you can't
get out of. Have enough sense
to know what's going on,"
and to women, "make sure
you have 20 cents for a phone
call."
Rosenberg said "don't
push," while Smith suggests
that singles not try to be
something they're not. And
from Dr. West, "Don't tell
your whole life story, don't be
overbearing and don't be in-
secure or a wimp."
If dating a particular per-
son doesn't work out into a
long-term relationship or
marriage, then, Levick says,
don't worry. "It's not a per-
sonal defeat if it doesn't
work. If you can get past the
defenses then that's the key."
And how would Odom
evaluate dating in the '80s?
"As an open, honest, direct
exchange between two
people." ID
