New York — The Interreli-
gious Task Force on Soviet
Jewry, which was founded by
the American Jewish Com-
mittee and the Catholic Con-
ference for Inter-racial Jus-
tice, has reported that viola-
tions of human rights in the
Soviet Union leave "few
grounds for optimism."
In a 76-page report titled
"The Struggle for Religious
Survival in the Soviet
Union," the task force an-
nounced it had based its con-
clusions, in part, on the fol-
lowing information:
Media attacks on Jews,
Judaism and Zionism have
persisted, while Jewish emig-
ration has plunged to the
lowest level in two decades.
In the early 1980s, six
Lithuanian priests were
brutally attacked, three of
them dying under suspicious
circumstances.
In the last year and a half,
three members of the out-
lawed Ukrainian Helsinki
Accords Monitoring Group
died in prison camps because
the authorities did not pro-
vide them with adequate
medical care.
More than 170 Baptists are
presently incarcerated for
actively practicing their
faith.
