Before Investing
Continued from preceding page
significantly lower net yield

daily interest of eight per-
cent.
CAPITAL APPRECIA-
TION: Financial growth is
the goal of many investment
programs. Appreciation of to-
day's assets can provide for
retirement security, future
family and edu-cation ex-
penses or an increased
standard of living. When
seeking • capital appreciation,
it is important to set goals
and understand the financial
risk that each investment
carries relative to its poten-
tial gains.
Common financial instru-
ments used for capital appre-
ciation include: common
stocks, mutual funds for
growth, options funds, listed
options, corporate bonds, con-
vertible bonds and preferreds,
zero coupon municipal bonds,
new issues, limited partner-
ships, unit trusts and man-
aged portfolios.
SPECULATIVE PRO-
FIT: Speculation is taking
above average risks for the
chance to make above aver-
age profits. One has to have
the nerve, the emotional atti-
tude, to accept rapid price
fluctuation, and one should
never risk money he/she can't
afford to lose. This area of
investment may include
commodity futures, guided
commodity accounts, interest
rate futures, gold and silver
bullion, gold coins, some
limited partnerships, some
common stocks, options, high
yield bonds, short selling and
buying on margin. Of course,
speculating is truly in the
eyes of the investor.
Someone once told me, "If
you're going to play the
game, you've go to know the
rules!" This is true of invest-
ing.
As 1987 approaches, here
are some New Year invest-
ment resolutions to consider:
Never trade on a "Hot Tip."
For the most part the mar-
kets are efficient. True "in-
sider information" is illegal.
Often what is heard is disin-
formation.
Never fall in love with
your stocks or other invest-
ments! Fall in love with
people! All too often investors
fail to sell stock or bonds or
other investments when there
is a profit to be made. They
have over the years made
this financial instrument a
companion, a friend. They've
graphed it, charted it, saved
all the reports. They've seen
it go up and down in price
over the years. Remember, in
most instances one can't
make a profit until one sells.
Just because a friend did it,
that's no reason the investor
should too.
Feel comfortable with in-
vestment decisions.
Remember, that when one
receives something for "free"
with an investment, someone
is paying for it, and it's prob-
ably the investor. This in-
cludes toasters, airline tic-
kets, fur coats, can openers
and cars.
Invest something every
month, no matter how small.
Good habits are as hard to
break as bad ones.
Make a map of financial
goals and needs.
Seek advice from true pro-
fessionals.
Never be afraid to ask.
There is no such thing as a
"stupid" question.
Plan to build wealth and
security.
