Arab Suspects
Implicate Syria
During Thal

West Berlin (JTA)— Two
Jordanian nationals on trial
here for bombing the office of
the German-Arab Friendship
Association in West Berlin
last March, have implicated
Syria directly in the act, both
in their pre-trial statements
and in court last week.
The defendants, Ahmed
Hasi, 35 and Farouk Sala-
meh, 39, said they received
the explosives from the
Syrian Embassy in East
Berlin. Salameh said Hasi
ta paid him 1,200 Marks for
transporting the explosives to
West Berlin and another
10,000 Marks in repayment of
a personal debt.
Hasi is the brother of Nezar
Hindawi who was convicted
in a London court last month
and sentenced to 45 years in
prison for attempting to
smuggle explosives aboard an
El Al airliner at Heathrow
Airport last April 17.
Hindawi's testimony irn-

plicated the Syrian Am-
bassador and Embassy staff
in London, leading Britain to
break diplomatic relations
with Damascus. If Syrian in-
volvement in the West Berlin
bombing is proved in court,
the Bonn government will be
under heavy pressure to im-
pose strict sanctions against
Syria.
Salameh and Hasi de-
scribed in detail how and
when their contacts with
Syrian Embassy officials oc-
curred. They said Syrian Em-
bassy employes instructed
them in the use of the ex-
plosives. Nine persons were
injured in the bombing,
several of them seriously.
In Bonn, Syrian Vice Presi-
dent Abdel Halim Khaddam
denied his country's involve-
ment in the bombing and
warned West Germany
against imposing sanctions.

Washington (JTA) — The
Supreme Court declined last
week to review a Federal ap-
pellate court decision barring
the city of St. Charles, Ill.,
from displaying a large,
lighted Christian cross on the
roof of its fire department as
part of an annual Christmas
display.
The Supreme Court also
ruled that the Ansonia, Conn.
school system need not a ac-
cept a teacher's proposed
alternative to unpaid leave for
religious purposes as long as
it makes a reasonable pro-
posal of its own to accom-
modate his religious needs.
The suit, brought by Ronald
Philbrook, a member of the
Worldwide Church of God,
was sent back to lower
Federal courts for further
proceedings.
In the St. Charles case, the
court let stand the decision
by Federal Appellate Judge
Richard Posner that a promi-
nent display by the city of
such an "unmistakable sym-
bol of Christianity" violated
the First Amendment ban
against the establishment of
religion because it "drama-
tically conveys a message of
governmental support for
Christianity."
Posner drew a distinction
between the cross and the less
conspicuous nativity scene in
Pawtucket, R.I. that the
Supreme Court upheld in a
1984 case. In that decision,
the court noted that the holi-
day display included a
Christmas three and other
more secular symbols of
Christmas.

Getting all
the facts
straight.

Novi—Some people have been
misinformed about the new B'Nai
Israel Memorial Gardens as being
non sectarian. This is false, as we
are a strictly Jewish cemetery
obeying all the laws of Jewish
burial. In fact this is the first
Jewish cemetery in almost 45
years!
Also some people think we are
part of Oakland Hills Memorial
Gardens. We are not! Again, we
are not a garden, section or part
of Oakland Hills Memorial
Gardens, although we engage the
same professional maintenance
crews. B'Nai Israel Memorial
Gardens is a separate entity and
have their own entrance, name
and address. We are not affiliated
with this adjacent cemetery. We
are a division of The Michigan
Cemetery Managerrient Inc.
Another area we would like to
clear up is the subject of perpetual
care. Today there is an irrevocable
trust fund regulated by Michigan
law to insure the perpetual
maintenance, development and
beautification of the cemetery
grounds and grave sites.
In essence, family and relatives
will never be asked to maintain
the grave or be called upon to pay
for anything for upkeep in the
future!
We hope this sets all the facts
straight that B'Nai Israel
Memorial Gardens is not non sec-
tarian, not part of Oakland Hills
Memorial Gardens and that your
purchase does include perpetual
care.
If you need more information,
please feel free to call 348-3711.
